TOPIC: ISSUE47 - "Society does not place enough emphasis on the intellect-that is, on reasoning and other cognitive skills."

Many people believe that our society fails to place emphasis on improving our individuals' intellect, such as reasoning and other cognitive skills. As far as I am concerned, such skills is important for our self-development indeed and our society should pay more attention to the intellect, and besides IQ(intelligence quotient), EQ, which can also be said emotion quotient, can also not be neglected.
When we look into our education system, we may find a list of problems which are in urgent need of solving. At school, lots of students are working hard to get a good record. Many of them are keeping complaining about the homework that could never be finished, and the great pressure in themselves, such as peer pressure, self-induced pressure, and pressure from parents and teachers. The statistic have proved that Asian students suffer the most. They have to recite a great deal of knowledge before examination, without a profound understanding of it for they have no more time. So, although having done a good job at school, interest in study is gradually lost in some of the students. They just force themselves to go on but fails to lay emphasis on the capability of creativity, recognition, and reasoning, for the masses of curriculums they have to learn made them lack of time to be curious about anything beyond their major courses.
The advance of our technology has intrigued a significant chance in the society, and the behavior of human beings. Some of capabilities in human have been not so strong as before, especially the ability to practise, which would certainly do harm to the way people think, for they are now resorting to something beyond themselves. With the development of machines, one basically don't need to do as much work as he used to. In factory, workers simply push the line of buttons and wait the next group in the pipeline to come, without thinking how is the machine manufactured, what is the working principle of it, to say nothing of how to improve on it. The same is true for professional training schools, which only teach the mere knowledge of how to work on a machine professionally, without letting students understand how does it work. Such a disadvantage which has brought about by the rapid development of our science and technology should certainly be prevented, and it time that our people and society should take some effective methods.
However, what are satisfying us is that our individuals are gradually concerning more about the issue as before. Some schools are begining to take effects to improve on students abilities to practise, and students have gained the capability of recognition by accumulating their experience and developing their practical abilities. More and more famous universities have been offering teachers and students some fund to assist in their research, thus students are able to know how to research earlier, and to learn a lot beyond their curriculums. What's more, as every coin has two sides, the development of technology is sure to bring us something beneficial. Many of jobs need one to think deeper, or think different, which is no longer as simple as the past. In such an environment, one has a very good chance to improve all aspects of his personal abilities, which certainly include ability of intellegince.
Admitted that great emphasis on the intellect are in great need, what I want to mention is that the concern on individual's other abilities is also of significant value. The EQ of individuals is becoming more attractive and more fashionable than before. If one is only good at his own business without caring for others, he will never achieve good success, let alone for the entire society. To develop into a real outstanding person, one should never ignore some other merits besides intelligience, such as honesty, probity, a willing to help others.
To sum up, it is important to lay emphasis on the intellect, which still needs the endeavor of both individuals and the society as a whole. What's more, as an individual's character is composed of lots of aspects, other aspects should not be ignored, which can help one to develop into a more excellect, more capitant person.
