TOPIC: ARGUMENT65 - The following appeared in a memo from the president of a chain of cheese stores located throughout the United States.
"For many years all the stores in our chain have stocked a wide variety of both domestic and imported cheeses. Last year, however, the five best-selling cheeses at our newest store were all domestic cheddar cheeses from Wisconsin. Furthermore, a recent survey by Cheeses of the World magazine indicates an increasing preference for domestic cheeses among its subscribers. Since our company can reduce expenses by limiting inventory, the best way to improve profits in all of our stores is to discontinue stocking many of our varieties of imported cheese and concentrate primarily on domestic cheeses."

In this argument, the author argues that the best way to improve the profits of the cheese store is to discontinue stocking many of their imported cheese and invest more on domestic cheeses. The deduction seems reasonable at first glance; however, it suffers form several critical fallacies and logical faults.
The first thing I want to point out is that the fact that best-selling cheeses at their newest store were domestic cheeses does not well support his conclusion. On the one hand, there is a possibility that there are only several newest stores that were taken into account, or the newest stores only provide domestic cheeses, so that the best-selling cheese in newest stores could not represent those in all stores. On the other hand, even the domestic cheeses are the top 5 best-sellers, it is possible that the total profit in all the chain stores by selling imported cheeses are still much higher than that by selling domestic ones. Thus, without a complete comparison between domestic cheeses and imported ones, it is too early to draw a conclusion.
Turning to the next, the survey among Cheeses of the World (CW) magazine subscribers is not a good indicator to that in US domestic cheeses will be preferred. Is the CW magazine a well known one? Can the subscribers of CW represent all the cheese consumers around the US? The author did not provide any information about the magazine and its subscribers. Perhaps CW is just a local magazine that serves only a few people in one town, or because of the magazine's influence, its subscribers always prefer domestic cheeses, though most citizens do not. For the above reason, the author's assumption was weakened.
The last but not the least, the author failed to prove that the best way to improve profits is to discontinue stocking many imported cheeses and thus reduce expenses by limiting inventory. He failed to consider any other alternative methods that will increase the income, such as make advertisement, increase the diversity of the cheeses, or import more famous cheese that they did not. And, although by limiting inventory the cost was reduced, the revenue could also be reduced. Only a detailed analyze on this issue would give us a recommendation that which way is the best.
To sum up, for the above reasons, the author's conclusion is open to doubt. By discontinuing stocking verities of imported cheese, possibly the profit of the chain store could be lowered significantly. Thus, the author should inspect the cheese market, and after that the author could come to a conclusion.
