TOPIC: ARGUMENT240 - The following appeared in a memo written by a dean at Buckingham College.
"To serve the housing needs of our students, Buckingham College should build a new dormitory. Buckingham's enrollment is growing and, based on current trends, should double over the next fifty years, thus making existing dormitories inadequate. Moreover, the average rent for an apartment in our town has increased in recent years. Consequently, students will find it increasingly difficult to afford off-campus housing. Finally, an attractive new dormitory would make prospective students more likely to enroll at Buckingham."

At first glance, the arguer's line of reason seems to be quite sound, according to his or her conclusion, Buckingham College(BC) will make prospective students more likely to enroll, if it build a new dormitory. But unfortunately, if we make a careful consideration of his or her evidence, doubt would be cast on this conclusion.
To begin with, the proposal of building a new dormitory cannot convine me. Since the arguer fails to provide any information that the dormitory in the BC is insufficient.
Secondly, the arguer simply assumes that the enrollment will be growing double over the next fifty years. To suppot his or her assumption he or her based the fact that BC's enrollment is growing and make the existing dorm inadequate. Firstly, there must be a big change over the fifty years. He or Her cannot apply the fact of today to the furture. Secondly, even if the enrollment is keeping increasing, the arguer does not infer that the number of enrollment would be double, thus he or she cannot predicate the inadequate dorm.
Thirdly, the arguer also points out that the rent for an apartment in town has increased in recent years, than he or she concludes that the students cannot afford off-campus housing. Yet on evidence proves this is a case. It is entirely possible that the raised rent is just a concequence of inflation. what a about the rent after adjustment the inflation? Moreover, the students may have enough money to afford the rent, even if it is increasing.
Finally, the arguer concludes that the action will make prospective students to enroll at BC is unwarranted. As we know, students must consider other factors, such as the quailty of teachers, school environment and so forth. Thus, the conclusion is unjustifiable.
After pointing out so many flaws in this argument, now we can say that the evidence used to bolster arguer's conclusion is unpersuasive. To strengthen it he or her must informs me that builting a new dormitory is necessary, and the students would be likely to live in school. And more details about the situation of BC. |
