TOPIC:argument 117 The following is a memo from the business manager of Valu-Mart stores.
"Over 70 percent of the respondents to a recent survey reported that they are required to take more work home with them from the workplace than they were in the past. Since Valu-Mart has not seen impressive sales in its office-supply departments in the past, we should take advantage of this work-at-home trend by increasing at all Valu-Mart stores the stock of home office machines such as printers, small copy machines, paper shredders, and fax machines. We will also increase stock of office supplies such as paper, pens, and staplers. With these changes, our office-supply departments will become the most profitable component of our stores."

The speaker asserts that there's an oppotunity to make the office-supply department the most profitable component of their stores, and the oppotunity lies in  a growing market of home office, therefore by increasing the home office machines and regular office supplies great profits can be accquaired. To my observation, the speaker's assertion is questionable in four different aspects. Thus I state my contention as below.

First, the accuracy of the survey requires to be examined cautiously and the indication of the survey should be explicated in detail and in application to  practical business analysis in order to ensure the usefulness of this piece of information. Respectly, the information should be traced to it's origin and it's scientific foundation needs checking. Then it moves to uncoding the indication of the information. Factors such as location difference(does the survey include the region where our customers live), data culculation(how many people in our areas will have icreasing home working hours for example) and the like must be taken into account to achieve quality results.

Second, given that the survey is reliable, the speaker still lack assessment of the potencial market. We may justifiably ask questions like Does a trend of home office increase mean more consumption of home office machines? If it does, then how much more? Also, it must be considered that trends change from time to time, and it pays to make a pridiction on how long this trend will last. Successfull business requires sufficient insurance gained through anylasis and insufficient analysis often leads to failure.

Third, the speaker neglected the fact that it's not just their stores that sale those products, there is an essencial problem of competitiveness of their stores. As the speaker mentioned, their stores have not seen impressive sales in its office-supply departments in the past, it's justifiable to worry about how many products they can sell given that there is a big home office market. In an old saying of the ancient China, it says Victory in a war often comes from a good understanding of both the enemy and ourselves. As to business we can also say that Victory often comes from a good understanding of both the coompetitors and ourselves.

Finally, the speaker didn't cover the most critical point--the profits. It is not known from the speaker's statement whether it makes more profits by removing the products already on the store shelves with copy machines and paper shredders,or whether those home office machines make profits at all(service after purchace, product quality and the like may cause the stores to lose money instead of earning it). So when it finally comes to selling products it must be proved that they make money.

In sum, the speaker didn't offer enough evidence that it's a good choice to increase the stock of home office machines, and furthur anylasis is needed to confirm the speaker's assertion.
