Issue 119
Should researchers forcus on areas that are likely to result in the benefit to the most people,as the speaker suggests? In my opion,we should consider both the short-term and the long-term interests of society when we set research priorities. It will be unwarranted for us to evalue the scientific research only by the immediate, predictable benefits.
Undoubtedly, the ultimate aim of any scientific or educational undertaking is to facilitate people's lives.Research priorities should continue in areas that social benifits are clear and immediate,or at least, predictable. For example, advances in medical technology all for safer, less invasive diagnosis and treatment;advances in genetics help prevent birth defects;and communication technology facilitates global peace and participation in democratic process.
However, this is not to say that research whose benefits are less immediate or clear should be given lower priority. We should realize that human beings have short-term interests and long-term interests.More than that,it is very important for the scientific researchers to choose their reseach directions freely.Only the researchs meet their interests,it will be benifit for them to show their talents bravely. Also these research have no benifits in the short periods, the treasures they made will after all be proved to be profound.Otherwise it would be a waste of the brains.
A telling example involves Stephen Hawking, today's preeminent astrophysicist. He research the effectiveness of behavioral modification techniquese in the reform of violent criminals.Admittedly, this example borders on hyperbole.Yet the aggregate effect of realistic cases would be to waste the intellectual talents of our world's researchers. Moreover, lacking genuine interest or motivation a researcher would be unlikely to contribue meaningfully to his or her "assigned" field.
"Does it deserved?"Someone may be wonder,"Why should we waste our money and time into something that deem to be usefulless?"But,who knows whether the research direction is usefull or not. It's just a short term benifits and a long-term benifits.Just imagine the pioneers in our scientific history, the first man who discovered the electicity,at that time, nearly nobody think this research was useful. But the fact is,the pioneers' research has become one of the most sources in our daily life.To draw a conclusion,it is difficult to predict which research avenues will ultimately lead to the greatest contributions to society.
In sum, when it comes to setting priorities for research,at least in sciences, the speaker goes too far by imply that research whose benefits are unknown are not worth pursuing. After all,any reseach worth doing delves into the unknown. We should strike a balance between theoretical research which will bring long-term benefits and the applied research which will bring short-term benefits when we set research priorities.
Argu 65
argument提纲:
1,重述题目
2,攻击新店中数据的问题,不全面,没有考虑其他因素
3,攻击杂志中的survey,没有调查对象的介绍,没有普遍性
4,小结(照搬孙远工具库的)
In this argument, the aurger recommends that all of their stores should stop stocking many of their varieties of imported cheese and concentrate primarily on domestic cheeses. To justify this claim, the auguer provide evidence that the five best-selling cheeses were all domestic last year.In addition,he cites the World magazine's survey which indicates increasing preference for domestic cheese. This arugument is unconvicing for several critical flaws.
First of all, this argument is based on a hasty generalization that all brands of domestic cheeses would sell better than imported cheeses. From the records of last year, only cheeses from Wisconsin are best selling, not all brands of domestic.Besides that,we can find only at their newest store, this kind of cheeses are sold well,it doesn't mean at other stores domestic cheese will also sell good. This fact tells very little about what actual conditions the newest store.Maybe there are more compinion held by the factuary of Wisconsin in this store to celebrate its openness.Maybe this newest store themselves is built in Wisconsin. As a result, cheeses from Wisconsin will sell well in this store. So the assumption that the customers of the chain's different stores all have the same preference is unwarranted.
In addition, the survey methodolgy held by Cheeses of the World magazine might be problematic in two respects:First,we are not informed that how many people were surveyed and who are these people. If this people who answer this survey or the people who subscribe this magazine prefer to buy domestic cheeses. From the survey we find little sign of such procedures for random sampling, thus doubting whether the respondents are respresentative of the overall population of the nation. If the subjects are only limited to a certain kind of people, the results of the survey will be unconvincing.Secondly, the survey is not justifiable,We cannot exclude the someone who prefer the imported cheeses doesn't send the survey back, and even don't subscribe this magazine. In a word, this survey results would be unreliable for the purpose of drawing any conclusions about domestic cheeses preferences.
To sum up,the conclusion lacks credibility because the evidence cited in the analysis does not lend strong support to what the arguer maintains. To strengthen the argument, the arguer would have to provide more evidence concerning the scientifism of the survey held by the magazine, and more consideration about a more representive store. A hasty generalization may mistake the decision of the chain cheese stores. |
