TOPIC: ISSUE136 - "The absence of choice is a circumstance that is very, very rare."

Concerning the topic of choice, I think it should be illustrated into two parts. In the sense of natural rule, there is always no choice but only to obey it. However, in the sense of social meanings, we always face many choices towards a single thing.

In the natural world, people have no other choice but only be obedient to the natural laws. People's life process, for instance, is a rule we must accept. No one can choose his born, because his parents can't ask his opinion about it. He also has no choice when he dies of whatever reasons. In addition, when a natural disaster accursed, we can just look on miserably and watch our homeland collapsed or burned and our family died. The earthquake happened in Sichuan, China last year deprived eighty thousand lives and caused many people homeless. If could, everyone would choose that this tragedy will never happen. Moreover, no matter how high a person can jump, he can't fly freely in the sky for the reason that any species, mankind included, can't escape the rule of gravity. And no matte how fast one can run, he can't outpace the speed of light according to the theories of relativity. So no matter how powerful human beings are, when facing with the natural rules, the only choice is to accept it and observe it.

However, in the social world, there are always a mass of choices for us to choose from. According to our common sense, we always have a great many choices of doing a certain thing. We can decide what to do first after getting up, we can choose what to eat for each meal. Furthermore, with the development in all aspects, more choices will be emerge. For example, in middle ages, all people are Christians. All heretics will be punished or even be put to death. But now people can choose what religion to believe in and what politic party to participate in.

Though everyday we confront so many choices, why sometimes we feel lacking choices?
The main reason for it is that there is always only one best or most beneficial choice. For example businessmen always complain that they have no time to eat lunch or they can only eat fast food delivered to their office. In fact, they can go to restaurant or go home to cook for themselves. But
considering the cost of time and labors, we choose not to do so. Students have to get good preparation for their examinations, because they want to get a satisfactory result and not want to regret. However they can choose not to work hard or even not to take exams. But doing this will lead to a bad result which they don't want. Take an extreme example, people can even choose to commit crimes, but they are bound to get punishments. In most cases, people don't lack choices. The reason they always say they have no choice is that there is only one feasible, beneficial choice which do the maximal good to them.

Another reason to account for the complaint of lacking choices is that we ourselves don't know what we really want and need. Many young people complain that their parents decide their life such as what school to study, what major to choose and what job to take. Nevertheless, from my perspective, these people don't know what they like and what they are interested. They lack ideal and goal to pursue so they walk on the traces their parents arrange for them. If they are really interested in one thing and want to contribute all their life on it, most parents will sustain for them, because the only wish for every parent is that their child will be happy. In this sense, people lack more ideals and goals than choices.

To sum up, admittedly in natural world we can only accept the natural rules and laws, because every species has its limitation and we can only be better adapted to the nature rather than change the nature. However, in social world, the condition that there is only one choice is very rare. In most cases, people feel scarcity of choices because they only take the most beneficial choice into consideration. Or even sometimes they are in loss of their opinion but to accept a choice others choose for them.
