238The following appeared in a memorandum from the president of Mira Vista College to the college's board of trustees.

"At nearby Green Mountain College, which has more business courses and more job counselors than does Mira Vista College, 90 percent of last year's graduating seniors had job offers from prospective employers. But at Mira Vista College last year, only 70 percent of the seniors who informed the placement office that they would be seeking employment had found full-time jobs within three months after graduation, and only half of these graduates were employed in their major field of study. To help Mira Vista's graduates find employment, we must offer more courses in business and computer technology and hire additional job counselors to help students with their resumés and interviewing skills."

It stands reason that points in this argument should be logical, cause of its clear statement. Grounding the comparison of nearby Green Mountain College and Mira Vista College in employment and courses' opening in these two colleges, the president of Mira Vista College made this conclusion that his college should offer more courses in business and computer technology and hire additional job counselors as Green Mountain College did to help their students in employment. However, when we have a deep thought, we will find some logical confusion.

Firstly, considering the reliability of this comparison of these two colleges, the president should calculate uncertain factors of it. The information about these two colleges is still unknown; people hold enough excuse doubting this comparison. The environmental factor looks an extremely significant element; the researcher should compare these two colleges completely. Do they possess approximately equal the number of graduate? Whether Green Mountain College is business college and it special focus on the development of skills? All these questions can't be answered without verifying.

Secondly, in spite of the environments of these two colleges, the compared factor in these arguments seems groundless. In this argument, the data that 90 percent of seniors in Green Mountain College had job offers from prospective employers and only 70 percent of the seniors in Mira Vista College had found full-time jobs within three months after graduation is meaningless. The definition of having job offers and having find full-time jobs is promiscuous; these two concepts should be compared. It's extremely possible that most of seniors in Mira Vista College had job offers before graduating; however, they were not satisfied with their job offers and refused their job offers. In spite of the job offers' comparison is unfaithful; the proportion of having found full-time jobs means nothing. These students in Green Mountain College had job offers may gave up their jobs and are still unemployment, the rest of graduate in Mira Vista College may own part-time jobs, which also indicates that the employment’s ability of Mira Vista College is higher.

Finally, the conclusion that Mira Vista College should take the same measure as Green Mountain College in business and computer technology courses and additional job counselors seems feeble. It appear reasonable, however, the president draw an analogy between Mira Vista College and Green Mountain College incorrectly. No evidence could prove that these measure are attribute to the success of employment in Green Mountain College, other measures may be the primary factors to success. If the situation is like that, the president of Mira Vista College should turn to these measures. Other significant problem is neglected, that wetter Mira College demand to take this measure, maybe it has hold more courses in business and computer technology and hire more job counselors than Green Mountain College's. It seems weakly that Mira Vista College should do like Green Mountain College.

Overall, the president of Mira Vista College did apply himself into his/her argument, while at the same time he was making lots of logical mistake. He should do more work on the comparison of these two colleges' environment, instead, make his conclusion blindly. At last, his conclusion shouldn't be accepted; however, his work should be accepted.

By making a comparison of Green Mountain College, which processes more business courses and more job counselors and therefore its graduating seniors who had job offers from prospective employers last years is nearly 90 percent, with Mira Vista College, which has less business courses and less job counselors and consequently only 70 percent of seniors informed the placement office that they had full-time jobs within three months, the author concludes that Mira Vista College should provide more courses in business and computer technology and hire additional job counselors in order to enhance the employment of its students. The arguments seems to sound on the surface, however, the author fails to consider other factors to evaluate the situation.

To begin with, the author unfairly assumes that the employment situation of Mira Vista College is worse than that of Green Mountain College, based on the evidence that percentage of the seniors who informed the placement office that they would be seeking employment had found full-time jobs is merely 70. However, the author ignores the possibility that the seniors who informed the placement office is not representive of all seniors who hunt for jobs. Perhaps most seniors did not know the existence of the placement office, let alone informed their hunting job information to them. It is also possible that a copious amount of seniors found their desirable jobs after there months after graduations.

In addition, even though the employment rate of Mira Vista College is lower than that of Green Mountain College, the author unjustly believes that the business course and job counselors can explain the difference. The author neglects other factors which play significant roles in the employment issue. Does Green Mountain College have more experienced and professional faculties, who conduce to students' learning efficiency? Is there better and advanced teaching infrastructure in Green Mountain College, which spur students interest in learning? In the face of such limited evidence, I can not accept the author's conclusion that it is business course and job counselors to be reason why Green Mountain College owns the employment advantage.

What's more, the author falsely argues that offering more courses in computer technology is helpful to solve the employment problem. There is no evidence that the companies near the Mira Vista College require the job applications to own the computer skills. Even if the applications with computer skills take a advantages than those who not in hunting jobs, emphasizing the importance of computer too much may lead to the problems that the students can not draw enough time and energy on their major courses in that the computer technology course occupy their much time.

To sum up, the argument suffers from several fallacies. To make the argument more convincing, the author should provide the specific information of employment in these college. To better access to the argument, the author needs represent us the requirement of hiring employee near these two colleges, If the authors had provided the information given above, I could accept the author's conclusion that offering more courses in business and computer technology and hring additional job counselors is a good way to solve the employment problem in Mira Vista College.

The argument is well presented, but not thoroughly reasoned. By making a comparison of Green Mountain College, with more business courses and more job counselors and correspondingly higher employment of graduates, with Mira Vista College, the president of Mira Vista College draw into the conclusion that more courses in business and computer technology and hire additional job counselors to help students with their resume and interviewing skills in order to help Mira Vista's graduates. To substantiate the conclusion, some of the concrete details about last year's overall employment of the graduates seniors from both colleges, are presented. However, some substantial concerns that should be addressed are neglected, and logical flaws appear.

Firstly, the president fails to consider other possible alternatives to cause the high employment of last year's graduating seniors at Green Mountain College. Such alternatives may include the fact that Last year's high job offers cannot reflect the employment rate on the whole over years, since last year more graduates of business might be needed as a result of the quick development of economic. It is probable that Green Mountain College provides a better intern system with some insightful companies. If so, students with working experiences may acquire the job offers easily.

Even assuming that more business courses and more job counselors are the main cause of the high employment, many other possibilities may give the answer to the less job offers of the Mira Vista College. It is possible that most of the graduate seniors went on further study, say, studying abroad, so that none of them would pay attention to jobs. Again, the graduates may be strong enough to build their own careers.

Even if the low employment of the Mira Vista College is partly due to the curriculums, no one can ensure that more business courses are appropriate for Mira Vista, and there are also other measures that can be taken to improve the employment rate. Without giving consideration to the intimate situations of the two colleges, the president cannot conclude ambiguously. Maybe the Green Mountain College majors on literacy, while the Mira Vista College is a science school. If so, offering courses in business will be a great difficulty for the college, in that it cannot be achieved in a day or improvised by a command of mere will. Additionally, other methods can be used to help Mira Vista's graduates find employment.

Overall, with so many logical flaws, the validity of the conclusion is open to doubt. Therefore, to make the argument more convincing, the president needs to provide more information about conditions of the two colleges and the employment statistics in recent years. Besides, clearly knowing the current employment is also a necessity. If the argument had intended the given factors discussed above, it would have been more insightful and logically acceptable.
