TOPIC: ARGUMENT43 - The following appeared as part of a business plan developed by the manager of the Rialto Theater.
"Despite its downtown location, the Rialto Movie Theater, a local institution for five decades, must make big changes or close its doors forever. It should follow the example of the new Apex Theater in the mall outside of town. When the Apex opened last year, it featured a video arcade, plush carpeting and seats, and a state-of-the-art sound system. Furthermore, in a recent survey, over 85 percent of respondents reported that the high price of newly released movies prevents them from going to the movies more than five times per year. Thus, if the Rialto intends to hold on to its share of a decreasing pool of moviegoers, it must offer the same features as Apex."
The author mentions a new theater, Apex, which has plush facilities and luxurious surroundings, and cites a recent survey that over 85 percent of respondents reported that they go to the movies less due to the high price. In light of these facts ,the author claims the Riato cannot hold on to its share of a decreasing pool of moviegoers unless it makes recondition with Apex as model .however, these facts are unsubstantiated ,which makes the claim unconvincing as it stands.
First of all, the author do not inform us that people prefer to go to the Apex rather than Rialto,
and the profit of Apex is much more than its counterpart. He also fails to prove that people like the characteristics of Apex and feel more comfortable in the Apex. Without these evidences ,the author cannot convince me that the Rialto movie theater should feature itself like Apex does.
Secondly, the author relies on a recent survey, however, he do not affirm the survey's reality and validity. It is entirely possible that the survey's respondents are not representative of the overall group of people who go to theatre to watch films. We do not know the traits of respondents ,their ages, gender ,even the condition of salaries. Maybe the respondents are the youth who cannot afford the high price of tickets. In this point ,the survey lend no support to the claim and the author is more unconvincing.
Finally, the author said the Rialto must offer the same features as Apex to hold on to its share .However ,he ignores other methods for Rialto to make profits. The Rialto is located in the downtown and is a local institution of five decades. thus it has its own advantages. People who go to the Apex may just go shopping instead of go to movies. So the Rialto has no need to mimic the Apex, instead, it can do some improvement according to its own characteristics. In the way , imitating to Apex is not the only way to ameliorate.
In sum, the claim is not well supported .To bolster the allege the author should provide information about profitability of two theaters and people's preference of environment of movies. Relying on an unsubstantiated survey solely the author cannot convince me that Rialto should do any change .He must act a further investigation and consider the situation completely to make a conclusion. |
