----At a river ford on the Donner Pass route to California, the city of Reno grew as bridges and railroads were built.
  (A) Settle
  (B) To settle
  (C) It was settling
  (D) Having been settled

13 THe mountains surrounding Los Angeles effectively shield the city from the hot, dry winds of the Mojave Desert, ---- the circulation of air
  (A) But they also prevent
  (B) also prevented by them
  (C) and also to prevent
  (D) and also preventing

15 Nebraska has floods in some years,----
  (A) in others drought
  (B) droughts are others
  (C) while other droughts
  (D) others in drought

24 A conductor (used) signals and gestures to let the (musicians) (to know) when (to play) various parts of a composition.

34 Scientists believe that by (altering) the genetic composition of plants it is possible ot develop specimens that are (resisting) to (disease) and have (increased) food value.
The reason for failure: 固定搭配不清楚: be resistant to...

37 The american anarchist Emma Goldman infused her spirited lectures (publishes) and demonstrations (with) a passionate (belief) in the freedom of (the) individual.

39 (The) main (advertising) media include (direct mail), ratio, television, magazines, and (newpapers).

3 Beverly Sills, ----assumed directorship of the New Work City Opera in 1979.
  (A) be a star soprano
  (B) was a star soprano
  (C) a star soprano and
  (D) a star soprano

4 ---- of tissues is known as histology
  (A) Studying scientific
  (B) The scientific study
  (C) To study scientifically
  (D) That is scientific studying

13 Jackie Robinson, ---- to play baseball in the major leagues, joined the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947.
  (A) the Black American who first
  (B) the first Black American
  (C) was the first Black American
  (D) the first and a Black America who

35 Ice is less (denser) (than) the liquid (from which) (it) is formed.
    less+adj...than...: 表示"不..."

40 Thunder can be (listened) from a (maximum) distance of about ten miles (except) under (unusual) atmosphere.

26 The (strength), size, and surefootedness of the LLama (make) it as (excellency) beast of burden in mountainous regions today (as) it was in the past.

35 In (the) United Sates, Maryland ranks (second) (only to) Virginia as (a) oyster-producing state.
  考察a\an的区别!!

37 Algae have been an (extremely) emportant (link) in the food chain (after) the beginning of (life) on Earth as we know it.

39 Butte, Montana, (had built) above large (deposits) of silver, gold, and copper and (became) known as "the (richest) hill on Earth"

33 Rice (adapt) better than other (grain) crops to areas with (unfavorable) saline, alkaline, (or) acid sulate soils.

Note: despite is prep. and can't be used to link the two sentences. For example:
(Despite) they are (small), poines are (strong) and (have) great stamina.

Other mistakes:
(1) (In the late) ninetheenth century, many public buildings, especially (that) on college campuses, (were built) in the Romanesue Revival style of (architecture).

(2) (Since) 1908, breeders (set out) to produce chickens that could (survive) Canada's (cold climate).
Answer: The verb in this sentence is in the past tense to indicate that something occured at a specific time in the past. The preposition In should therefore replace Since. Since is used with the present perfect tense.

(3) ---- is more interested in rhythm than in melody is apparent from his compositions.
(a)That Philip Glass
(b)Philip Glass, who
(c)Philip Glass
(d)Because Philip Glass

(4) Every computer consists of a number of systems --- together.
(a)by working
(b)work
(c)they work
(d)that work

-----------6/18-----------
A bold attempt is half success
All things are difficult before they are easy
What we acuire without sweat we give away without regret
Nothing is impossible to a willing heart
Work makes the workman
Constant dropping wears the stone.
Experience is the mother of the wisdom
Every man is his own worst enemy
Actions speak louder than words
From samll beginnings comes great things
Wisdom in the mind is better than money in the hand
The voice of one man is the voice of no one
A great ship asks for deep waters
Where there is life, there is hope.
Two heads are better than one.
It is never too later to learn
It is never too later to mend
The secret of success is constancy of purpose
Every profession produces its own best

Today must borrow nothing of tomorrow

A chain is no stronger than its weakest link
All is not gold that glitters
A child is better unborn than untaught.
A friend is best found in adversary
All covet, all lose.
