TOPIC: ISSUE144 - "It is the artist, not the critic,* who gives society something of lasting value."
*a person who evaluates works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc.
WORDS: 538 TIME: 0:36:47 DATE: 2007-3-8
Artists and critics are just like twins. They are often talked about by us together. In my point of view, there's no doubt that it's the artists that create great art works containing lasting values; however, to convey these values to the society, critics play a crucial role.
For artists, the purpose of arts is to express their private views of our society. Without the talents, efforts and the very special individual experiences of artists, there's no way for us to appreciate their great art works. Only when Beethoven integrated his unmatchable talents on music with the tragedy in his life that he became deaf when he was in the middle age, the immortal symphonies, Hero and Fate were created. Except Van Gogh who having the special feeling of light, shapes, colors, and the nature of life on himself together, no others could produce one of the most exciting paintings 'Sunflower'. Without artists, arts die.
However, artists themselves alone can not give the society something of lasting values. The lasting values contained in those great art works are the deeper feelings about the world, not the appearances. Only when these deeper meaning are understood by the publics, the lasting values in these art works are fully realized in the society. Nevertheless, commons who lack of essential knowledge usually can not appreciate the higher meaning behind the appearances of these art works. They are more often fascinated in the special combination of light, colors and motions of art works and ignore the deeper meaning artists want to convey. For instance, when asked why they like Van Gogh's 'sunflower', it's quite possible that most respondents would say because this painting is beautiful.
Therefore, there must be someone bridging the gap between the artists and the publics and convey the society the lasting values in art works. Such persons can only be critics. Critics always have abundant knowledge in the fields of art and history. They know both how deep thoughts are interpreted in art works and the individual experiences of artists. These make critics have the potential to feel what the artists feel when they do their great works, understand what the artists want to record and then convey these ideas to the publics. In the eyes of an untrained viewer, the immortal painting, 'sunflower' is just beautiful. Nevertheless, if we hear the explanation of it's deep meaning from some critics, we can get closer to Van Gogh's heart and feel the same admiration of the strength of life that he had when he drawn this painting. Without critics, the society can not really
appreciate the lasting values in great art works.
In addition, even for artists themselves, communication with some critics is also beneficial and gives them better preparation for creating great works with long lasting values. From the critics, artists can get feedback opinion about both the weakness and merits in their works. Such information prompts the artists make some modification of both their skills and their thoughts and is essential for their maturation.
In sum, artists create something of long lasting values and critics convey these values to the publics. With the efforts from both the artists and critics, the spirits of our humans make a progress.
