Perhaps the best example of Westphalia's triumph is the fate of the Spanish Empire. Spain undoubtedly possessed the most powerful empire in Europe before the Thirty Years' War. A series of unfortunate events led to the decline of Spain's Empire including Britain's victory over the Spanish Armada in 1588, the collapse of clerical supremacy during the Protestant Reformation, and defeat in the Thirty Years' War. Yet none of these factors account for Spain's inability to rebound and retain its status as a dominant force in European politics from the eighteenth through twenty-first centuries. Instead, this can be explained by Spain's unwillingness to embrace the Westphalain system which shaped European diplomacy from the early modern period to the present.
