In this era of rapid social and technological  change  leading to increasing life complexity and psychological displacement, both positive and negative effects among persons in Western society call for a balance in which there are both specialists and generalists. (给出观点,通才与专才都必须)

Specialists are necessary in order to allow society as a whole to properly and usefully assimilate the masses of new information and knowledge that have come out of research and have been widely disseminated through mass global media.(1. 专才是必须的) As the head of Pharmacology at my university once said (and I paraphrase):"I can only research what I do because there are so many who have come before me to whom I can turn for basic knowledge. It is only because of each of the narrowly focused individuals at each step that a full and true understanding of the complexities of life can be had. Each person can only hold enough knowledge to add one small rung to the ladder, but together we can climb to the moon."(名人名言,老师上课的时候说过,and I paraphrase在记不清原句的时候尤其管用) This illustrates the point that our societies level of knowledge and technology is at a stage in which there simply must be specialists in order for our society to take advantage of the information available to us. (总结:唯有靠专才掌握知识和技术)

Simply put, without specialists, our society would find itself bogged down in the Sargasso sea of information overload. While it was fine for early physicists to learn and understand the few laws and ideas that existed during their times, now, no one individual can possibly digest and assimilate all of the knowledge in any given area. (进一步阐述论点1,专才是必须的)

On the other hand, Over specialization means narrow focii in which people can lose the larger picture.(专才有缺陷)No one can hope to understand the human body by only inspecting one's own toe-nails. What we learn from a narrow focus may be internally logically coherent but may be irrelevant or fallacious within the framework of a broader perspective. Further, if we inspect only our toe-nails, we may conclude that the whole body is hard and white. Useful conclusions and thus perhaps useful inventions must come by sharing among specialists. Simply throwing out various discoveries means we have a pile of useless discoveries, it is only when one can make with them a mosaic that we can see that they may form a picture. (专才的缺陷:Not only may over-specialization be dangerous in terms of the truth, purity and cohesion of  knowledge,)

Not only may over-specialization be dangerous in terms of the truth, purity and cohesion of  knowledge, but it can also serve to drown moral or universal issues. Generalists and only generalists can see a broad enough picture to realize and introduce to the world the problems of the environment. With specialization, each person focuses on their research and their goals. Thus, industrialization, expansion, and new technologies are driven ahead. Meanwhile no individual can see the holistic view of our global existence in which true advancement may mean stifling individual specialists for the greater good of all. (专才与通才的对比)

Finally, over-specialization in a people's daily lives and jobs has meant personal and psychological compartmentalization. People are forced into pigeon holes early in life (at least by university) and must consciously attempt to consume external forms of stimuli and information in order not to be lost in their small and isolated universe. Not only does this make for narrowly focused and generally poorly-educated individuals, but it guarantees a sense of loss of community, often followed by a feeling of psychological displacement and personal dissatisfaction.

Without generalists, society becomes inward-looking and eventually inefficient. Without a society that recongnizes the impotance of braod-mindedness and fora for sharing generalities, individuals become isolated. Thus, while our form of society necessitates specialists, generalists are equally important. Specialists drive us forward in a series of thrusts while generalists make sure we are still on the jousting field and know what the stakes are.

Specialists are not overrated today.  More generalists may be needed, but not to overshadow the specialists. (开篇给出观点,专才没被高估,即专才是重要的)Generalists can provide a great deal of information on many topics of interest with a broad range of ideas.  People who look at the overall view of things can help with some of the large problems our society faces today.  But specialists are necessary to gain a better understanding of more in depth methods to solve problems or fixing things. (用but引出下文的进一步阐述)
One good example of why specialists are not overrated is in the medical field.  Doctors are necessary for people to live healthy lives. When a person is sick, he may go to a general practitioner to find out the cause of his problems.  Usually, this kind of "generalized" doctor can help most ailments with simple and effective treatments. Sometimes, though, a sickness may go beyond a family doctor's knowledge or the prescribed treatments don't work the way they should.  When a sickness progresses or becomes diagnosed as a disease that requires more care than a family doctor can provide, he may be referred to a specialist. For instance, a person with constant breathing problems that require hospitalization may be suggested to visit an asthma specialist. Since a family doctor has a great deal of knowledge of medicine, he can decide when his methods are not effective and the patient needs to see someone who knows more about the specific problem; someone who knows how it begins, progresses, and specified treatments.  This is an excellent example of how a generalied person may not be equipped enough to handle something as well as a specialized one can. (举出医疗例子来说明专才重要)

Another example of a specialist who is needed instead of a generalist involves teaching.  In grammar school, children learn all the basic principles of reading, writing, and arithematic.  But as children get older and progress in school, they gain a better understanding of the language and mathematical processes.  As the years in school increase, they need to learn more and more specifics and details about various subjects. They start out by learning basic math concepts such as addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication. A few years later, they are ready to begin algebraic concepts, geometry, and calculus. They are also ready to learn more advanced vocabulary, the principles of how all life is composed and how it functions.  One teacher or professor cannot provide as much in depth discussion on all of these topics as well as one who has learned the specifics and studied mainly to know everything that is currently known about one of these subjects.  Generalized teachers are required to begin molding students at a very early age so they can get ready for the future ahead of them in gaining more facts about the basic subjects and finding out new facts on the old ones.(举出教学中的例子论证专才重要)

These are only two examples of why specialists are not highly overrated and more generalists are not necessary to the point of overshadowing them.  Generalists are needed to give the public a broad understanding of some things.  But, specialists are important to help maintain the status, health, and safety of our society.  Specialists are very necessary.(总结强调中心,专才重要)

Hospital statistics regarding people who go to the emergency room after roller skating accidents indicate the need for more protective equipment. Within this group of people, 75 percent of those who had accidents in streets or parking lots were not wearing any protective clothing (helmets, knee pads, etc.) or any light-reflecting material (clip-on lights, glow-in-the-dark wrist pads, etc.). Clearly, these statistics indicate that by investing in high-quality protective gear and reflective equipment, roller skaters will greatly reduce their risk of being severely injured in an accident.
argue 6
The notion that protective gear reduces the injuries suffered in accidents seems at first glance to be an obvious conclusion.[简述题目的观点] After all, it is the intent of these products to either provent accidents from occuring in the first place or to reduce the injuries suffered by the wearer should an accident occur. However, the conclusion that investing in high quality protective gear greatly reduces the risk of being severely injured in an accident may mask other (and potentially more significant) causes of injuries and may inspire people to over invest financially and psychologically in protective gear.[用however转折,给予批驳]

First of all, as mentioned in the argument,[描述相关内容] there are two distinct kinds of gear - preventative gear (such as light reflecting material) and protective gear (such as helmets). Preventative gear is intended to warn others, presumably for the most part motorists, of the presence of the roller skater.[阐述相关论述对象的功能] It works only if the "other" is a responsible and caring individual who will afford the skater the necessary space and attention.[由前面一句对功能的阐述,提出题目所述观点的局限性,用题目的观点来攻击题目本身] Protective gear is intended to reduce the effect of any accident, whether it is caused by an other, the skater or some force of nature. Protective gear does little, if anything, to prevent accidents but is presumed to reduce the injuries that occur in an accident.[同前面两句的功能,这种平行结构使得论述更有条理,结构更为清晰] The statistics on injuries suffered by skaters would be more interesting if[对题目中的统计例证展开攻击,说明片面性和局限性,同时从其缺点出发,提出可行的建议] the skaters were grouped into those wearing no gear at all, those wearing protective gear only, those wearing preventative gear only and those wearing both. These statistics could provide skaters with a clearer understanding of which kinds of gear are more beneficial.

[攻击观点中另一个缺点]
The argument above is weakened by the fact that it does not take into account the inherent differences between skaters who wear gear and those who do not.(批驳2,考虑不周,之后给出可能的其他情况)If is at least likely that those who wear gear may be generally more responsible and/or safety conscious individuals. Skaters who wear gear may be less likely to cause accidents through careless or dangerous behavior. It may, in fact, be their natural caution and repsonsibility that keeps them out of the emergency room rather than the gear itself. (also引出其他的小错误,一段两错误的方法在错误较多的topic中可以应用)Also, the statistic above is based entirely on those who are skating in streets and parking lots which are relatively dangerous places to skate in the first place. People who are generally more safety conscious (and therefore more likely to wear gear) may choose to skate in safer areas such as parks or back yards.

The statistic also goes not differentiate between severity of injuries. (对于数据的反映情况进行批驳)The conclusion that safety gear prevents severe injuries suggests that it is presumed that people come to the emergency room only with severe injuries. This is certainly not the case. (再次用also引出小错误的批驳)Also, given that skating is a recreational activity that may be primarily engaged in during evenings and weekends (when doctors' offices are closed), skater with less severe injuries may be especially likely to come to the emergency room for treatment.

Finally, there is absolutely no evidence provided that high quality (and presumably more expensive) gear is any more beneficial than other kinds of gear. (证据不足,给出其他的可能性)For example, a simple white t-shirt may provide the same preventative benefit as a higher quality, more expensive, shirt designed only for skating. Before skaters are encouraged to invest heavily in gear, a more complete understanding of the benefit provided by individual pieces of gear would be helpful.(给出建议)

The argument for safety gear based on emergency room statistics could provide important information and potentially saves lives. (再踩一脚)Before conclusions about the amount and kinds of investments that should be made in gear are reached, however, a more complete understanding of the benefits are needed.(给出建议) After all, a false confidence in ineffective gear could be just as dangerous as no gear at all.(首尾呼应)

作者很好地发现了5处错误,于是采用一段中含有两个错误,一个主要一个次要地进行排列,给出批驳的理由,或者举反例,还会在适当的时候给出建议。连接词使用恰当。是一篇很优秀娴熟的文章。

The argument presented is limited but useful. It indicates a possible relationship between a high percentage of accidents and a lack of protective equipment.(题目的主要内容)The statistics cited compel a further investigation of the usefulness of protective gear in preventing or mitigating roller-skating related injuries.(作者自己的观点:) However, the conclusion that protective gear and reflective equipment would "greatly reduce. risk of being severely injured" is premature(攻击1,data). Data is lacking with reference to the total population of skaters and the relative levels of experience, skill and physical coordination of that population.[事实论据的片面性] It is entirely possible that further research would indicate that most serious injury is averted by the skater's ability to react quickly and skillfully in emergency situations(其他可能的情况).

Another area of investigation necessary before conclusions can be reached is identification of the types of injuries that occur and the various causes of those injuries.(思考不完善) The article fails to identify the most prevalent types of roller-skating related injuries. It also fails to correlate the absence of protective gear and reflective equipment to those injuries.(论据论点联系不足)For example, if the majority of injuries are skin abrasions and closed-head injuries, then a case can be made for the usefulness of protective clothing mentioned. Likewise, if injuries are caused by collision with vehicles (e.g. bicycles, cars) or pedestrians, then light-reflective equipment might mitigate the occurences. However, if the primary types of injuries are soft-tissue injuries such as torn ligaments and muscles, back injuries and the like, then a greater case could be made for training and experience as preventative measures.(提出另外可能的情况以及相应措施)

50. "In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach."
为了提高大学的教学质量,所有的教职员工应该去校外参加一些和他们教的课程相关的工作

Whether college faculty should also work outside academic world in professions related to their academic fields depends primarily on the specific academic area. With respect to fields in which outside work is appropriate, I strongly agree with the statement that; students and faculty all stand to gain in a variety of respects when a professor complements academic duties with real world experience.
As a threshold matter, the statement requires qualification in two respects. First, in certain academic areas there is no profession to speak of outside academia. This is especially true in the humanities; after all, what work outside academia is there for literature or philosopher? Secondly, the statement fails to consider that in certain other academic areas a professor’s academic duties typically involve practical work of the sort that occurs outside academia. This is especially true in the fine and performing arts, where faculty actively engage in the craft by demonstrating techniques and styles for their students.
Aside from these two qualifications, I strongly agree that it is worthwhile for college faculty to work outside academia in professional positions related to their filed. There are three clear benefits for doing so.
First, working in professions relevant to the courses they teach can broaden the faculty’s horizon, ferret out cutting-edge and controversial issues and keep the faculty with up-dated information, which is of especially prior to the faculty in scientific filed. As is said in the article ‘ten simple rules for doing your best research’, the scientist himself lays great emphasis on ‘leave your door open’, which means to keep yourself informed of the current changing of your field.  Only by this can the professors provide his students the most advanced scientific knowledge and adjust his teaching plan. It may even stimulate the professors to better turn their research into practical production and to benefit the people.
Secondly, as a professor, keeping abreast with the changing demands of society enables him to help students either interested in the further research in the subject or eager to pursue a related career, as he is well-informed with the current condition, and thus is able to provide proper advice for the students. Comparatively, the consultant in the university may fail to provide such professional advice to the students due to the lack of insight in the certain field.
Thirdly, being actively involved in the work outside academic world is a good chance for professors to cooperate with other experts, and to boost the professor’s credibility, as well as win him more funds for research. One of my professors in college is an expert in wireless and electric chip. He is usually invited to take part in the modeling of chips for other companies. He is very famous by cooperating with so many specialists, and become well-known inside his field, more funds come to his hand for ding research. He usually jokes about his real experience in the process of work, making us laugh and at the same time learn more about the subject in which academic field he’s teaching.
In sum, aside from certain academic areas in which outside work is unavailable or unnecessary, faculty are advised to take part in work in relevance to the academic area they are in.

144"It is the artist, not the critic,* who gives society something of lasting value." a person who evaluates works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc.
144. 是艺术家而不是批评家,给了社会一些永久的价值。*批评家指经常评价艺术作品,例如小说、电影、音乐、绘画等的人

The statement asserts that it is the artist, instead of the critics, who gives the society something of lasting value. Although the critics may make a contribution in the evaluating of arts, they are not the one who provides the lasting value. I partially agree with this opinion. Just think about the masterpiece left by Beethoven, the Santos of the Virgin composed by Raphael, the Michelangelo's famous frescoes in the Sistine Chapel in Rome. These are just the famous work of everlasting value left by the artists.
Admittedly, some critics do help to bring out and popularize the masterpieces. The critics can help the public to understand the value of an art; otherwise the masterpiece may not be recognized by the grass root. Then the potential value of the art may not be discovered. Secondly, by evaluating the arts, the critics have the chance to filter some bad art from the worthwhile. It can save the time of its people and prevent them from the fast food culture, or raunchy culture. Moreover, critics can provide feedbacks to the artists’ work, to help them improve their work.

The mentioned above contributions made by critics may seem reasonable at the first glance, but once we look deeper and think more carefully, we may find it to be controversial.

Firstly, due to the lack of fixed standard in art field, the so called good work brought out by the critics may not be the exact one. As the saying goes, 1000 readers have 1000 Hamlet.  Even different critics would have different opinions on the same art work. On the other hand, the comment from the critics my distract us from the appreciating of art work as the first impression are the strongest. With their authoritative assesses, the masses are deprived of rights to communicate with the artists spiritually.

Secondly, the second function of critics, to filter out the bad art from the worthwhile one may sometimes work on the contrary way. Think about the complete dismissal of Van Gogh’s painting by the esteemed critics at that time, some of the critics even taking commending his work as a depreciation of them. Their critique serves more like a misguidance rather than a good lead to the ever-lasting value of the work.

Last but not least, though we cannot neglect the feedback role of critics, in the field of art however, the style of an artist and his work is hard to change just by the words of critics, as art is usually the reflection of the artists of both sudden inspiration and long accumulated personal style. Moreover, as is mentioned before, the critique from critics may be more like a misguidance rather than a good lead. Some pieces works of ever lasting value are just the result of the artists’ intransigency to those critics.

In sum, the role of critics cannot be neglected us, as some of them do sever as a spreader, a filter, or a feedback to those great work. However, if we have a closer look at the function of both artists and the critics, w come to understand that it is the artists who provide the society with everlasting value.

Q11 "All nations should help support the development of a global university designed to engage students in the process of solving the world's most persistent social problems."
11. 所有的国家都应该帮助建立起一个全球性的大学,用来培养学生们解决世界上最顽固头疼的社会问题。

The speaker asserts that all nations should cooperate together to develop a global university to engage students to solve the world’s persistent social problems. I agree insofar that a global university should be established to solve the social problem and to promote the cooperation between different countries and cultures, there are still problems for us to worry about the operation of the unique university.
One compelling argument about why the global university should be supported is that due to the current world condition. Many problems rises such as the environmental problems, including the Ozone depletion, global warming, etc. there are problems like the limitation of nuclear weapons. these are problems can’t be solved by a single country. Only under the cooperation of different countries, can it become no longer a headache. The global university, under such condition, serves as a pool of wisdom, preparing the students, or future talents aiming at dealing with these problems.(问题的全球性)
Another compelling argument is that the global university stimulates the cooperation between countries and even provides us with better ideas. Especially with the advent of globalization, pool of wisdom is a wise way to better equip us for the challenges the world is confronting us with. Think about the ISS (international space station), scientists coming from fifteen countries including America, Russia, Germany, Italy, China work together to carrying out the research. In the global university, students are under the same circumstances, and being earlier exposed to talents from a different culture. Through the cooperation to solve the persistent social problems, they may be able to get new inspiration.(加强合作,集思广益)
Though the arguments in support to the establishment of a global university seem compelling, the problems in establishing a global university should not be neglected. On one hand, due to the complexity of the current world situation, each countries has it own problems to solve. For example, American will pay special attention on the fluctuation and development of its economic, while the countries in the middle East would be most concerned with the religious conflicts. This requires subdivided subjects in this university. Moreover, as a global university, it should work for the whole world instead of several powerful ones. However, it is hard to turn down a request from a powerful country’, or the one who donate most money. The efficiency and fairness of such an organization is the most important, which, is also the hardest to balance due to the special characteristic of it. Some may also argue that the global university can be a great cost, while there are many other ways to solve the social problems like through the internet or the international conference, which will be more efficient and targeted(pointed?).
(可能问题:区域问题的特性,效率与公平,资金的应用)
In sum , given the current world condition ,the establishment of global university is advisable. it can prepare the wisdom for to solve the social problems which can’t be solve by the individual. It can also stimulate the cooperation between different countries or cultures to bring out the best of the research. On the other hand however, there are much to think about like the differences between countries, the efficiency and the fairness of the university and the large cost. In the final analysis, as long as each country can support the university in a will to creat a win-win situation, a global university is worth being established. .

As is said in the article ‘ten simple rules for doing your best research’, the scientist himself lays great emphasis on ‘leave your door open’, which means to keep yourself informed of the current changing[changes] of your field.  Only by this can the professors provide his students the most advanced scientific knowledge and adjust his teaching plan. It may even stimulate the professors to better[放到句末] turn their research into practical production and to benefit the people.
Secondly, as a professor, keeping abreast with the changing demands of society enables him to help students either interested in [help +adj?]the further research in[of] the subject or eager to pursue a related career, as he is well-informed with the current condition, and thus is able to provide proper advice for the students.
[teach的用法建议去查一下,文中多次误用]
In sum, aside from certain academic areas in which outside work is unavailable or unnecessary, faculty are advised to take part in work in relevance to the academic area they are in.
1、结构清晰,部分观点论述不够深入
2、语法问题比较多,建议多查查一些词的用法
3、具体的例子最好说明其广泛领域中的应用,否则有以偏概全之嫌

212T"If a goal is worthy, then any means taken to attain it is justifiable."
212. 只要一个目标是值得去实现的,那么任何手段都是有理由的。
The author asserts that a worthy goal deserves all means to attain it. However, i find this statement had to be discussed with clearer explanation of worthy, and can be true with complementary condition.

To begin with, the definition of “worthy” here is a little bit ambiguous. Worthy means deserving the cost, and this leaves us much room to think about.  For example, in a survey about the first thing to own after you save enough money, most men choose car while the majority of women choose house. Men are earger to travel around while women tend to seek stability according to the psychologists. Thus, men would find saving for a car worthy while the ownership  a house comes second or even ranks poorly. Women, on the other hand, would try more means in persuit of a house. Without the clear definition of worthy, we can’t figure out what deserves every means because different people have different goals.

Moreover, even we come up with the same worthy things, we should only attain it with the legal means. The worthy goal, maintained with illegal measures, will disturb the social order, and the achieve can’t long enjoy the success. In the academic fraud about HuangYuxi change the data and lied to the public about his experiment of clone, he did win money and fame, which is treated by a large group of people as the worthy goal. However, he failed to attain the goal in a legal way, and it turns out to be a blemish in his life, and an end of his way in pursuit of fame. Worthy goals deserve trying more means, while illegal measures should never be taken into consideration.

Besides illegal means, the immoral means or even contentious ones should also be eliminated, even when the goal seems of great value. In1974, biologists Burg claimed to drop out the research on recombination of DNA, after a careful thinking about the potential moral problems the issue will bring to human society. The pursuit of unknown knowledge is usually of top priority of a scientist, but it finally gave way to the choice of morality.  (例子很怪,想不到官方点的且具有代替性的,)

With the means restricted under the legal and moral condition, worthy goals do need to be attained with no spared efforts. From the personal perspective, people must and have to achive his worthy goal after trying every means he can. Just like the film “the pursuit of happiness”, this touches millions of people’s heart. The hero tries every means to change his life, and after so many frustrations, he finally succeeds. From a country’s perspective, some cities in china like Beijing, Nanjing spent more money on the construction of a subway as the subways are designed to detour in protection of the ancient architectures.

In conclusion, the statement must be discussed with clear definition of “worthy”, and the means taken to attain the goal must be legal and moral. Only under these conditions can we agree with the speaker’s assertion that If a goal is worthy, then any means taken to attain it is justifiable.

ISSUE 212

The author asserts that a worthy goal deserves all means to attain it. However, i (I)find this statement had to be discussed with clearer explanation of worthy, and can be true with complementary condition.

To begin with, the definition of “worthy” here is a little bit ambiguous. Worthy means deserving the cost, and this leaves us much room to think about.  For example, in a survey about the first thing to own after you save enough money, most men choose car while the majority of women choose house. Without the clear definition of worthy, we can’t figure out what deserves every means because different people have different goals.

Moreover, even we come up with the same worthy things, we should only attain it with the legal means. The worthy goal, maintained with illegal measures, will disturb the social order, and the achieve (achiever)can’t long enjoy the success.

The pursuit of unknown knowledge is usually of top priority of a scientist, but it finally gave way to the choice of morality.  (例子很怪,想不到官方点的且具有代替性的,)(我觉得可以提一下clone在道德伦理上的争议)

With the means restricted under the legal and moral condition, worthy goals do need to be attained with no spared efforts. From the personal perspective, people must and have to achive his worthy goal after trying every means he can. Just like the film “the pursuit of happiness”, this touches millions of people’s heart. 逻辑关系很严密,结构也比较清晰,但感觉每个分论点最好有一个小结。
