大家客观一点,我想对自己的实力有个大概的评估,写的都不长,因为我打字实在太慢,估计考场上也写的不会很多。

Issue 140:    Some people believe that universities should require every student to take a variety of courses outside the student's field of study. Others believe that universities should not force students to take any courses other than those that will help prepare them for jobs in their chosen fields.
Write a response in which you discuss which view more closely aligns with your own position and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should address both of the views presented.

Nowadays, higher education become available to most people and lots of people can go to universities for further study and improvement. This higher education also plays significant roles in providing enough qualified workers to meet the needs of society. But when it comes to the question that whether universities should require every student to take a variety of course outside the student’s field of study and preparing for jobs, there are always a host of different opinions held by different individuals. Admittedly, it is very important for a university student to find an ideal job. However, it may be much more important for a person to form a wholesome personality. And frankly speaking, elective course may even be beneficial for a person rise up to a favorable position in job market.
To begin with, the competition in modern society becomes more and more fierce and it is quite difficult for university graduates to hold their place in the society. Students could spare no efforts to study their subject courses and prepare for their job, since any flaw or shortage may make them less competent in job-hunting, sometimes even be lethal in their career. The time and energy are also very limited and it is most advisable for a person to concentrate such precious things on the foremost place, just as an old Chinese saying goes: ‘Good steel should be used for the blade’s edge.’
Nevertheless, the university is not built to train expert workers but to cultivate intelligent citizen with wholesome personality. A person will soon be tired if studying the subject course all day long and lose the interest for anything else. He cannot form a broad view and comprehensive knowledge of the modern society, which is essential to be a man with a wholesome personality. And it may be a false dilemma since subject courses and elective courses are not necessarily mutually exclusive alternatives. People can sometimes perform better when use knowledge from other area to illuminate his own subject.
To sum up, there is no denying that people should have some elective courses and surely they can benefit from this choice. But on the other hand, they should make a reasonable allocation of time and energy and concentrate on the subject area. Only in this way may the students be competent while keep a wholesome personality.

Argument 166
The following memo appeared in the newsletter of the West Meria Public Health Council.
"An innovative treatment has come to our attention that promises to significantly reduce absenteeism in our schools and workplaces. A study reports that in nearby East Meria, where consumption of the plant beneficia is very high, people visit the doctor only once or twice per year for the treatment of colds. Clearly, eating a substantial amount of beneficia can prevent colds. Since colds are the reason most frequently given for absences from school and work, we recommend the daily use of nutritional supplements derived from beneficia. We predict this will dramatically reduce absenteeism in our schools and workplaces."
Write a response in which you discuss what questions would need to be answered in order to decide whether the recommendation is likely to have the predicted result. Be sure to explain how the answers to these questions would help to evaluate the recommendation.

In this argument, the author recommends the daily use of nutritional supplements derived from beneficia and is full of confidence that by this way the absenteeism in their schools and workplaces would be dramatically reduced. To justify his conclusion, the author cites a study about comsumption about the beneficia and refer to common sense that colds are the most popular reasons given for absences from schools and workplaces. At first glance, the recommendation seems advisable, but close scrutiny reveals that the conclusion is rife with unsubstantiated assumptions and logical flaws, and at last unconvincing in several aspects.
By citing a study that people rarely catch colds when the consumption of the plant beneficia is very high, the arguer unfairly come to the conclusion that eating a substantial amount of beneficia can prevent colds. First of all, the survey must be reliable and valid enough before I can accept any conclusion the author reaches based upon it. Even assuming that the survey is well authenticated, the arguer also commits a fallacy of "Post hoc, ergo propter hoc" in assuming that the consumption of the plant beneficia is the very cause that prevent catching colds. There are many other factors that may lead to the decline of catching colds, for instance, the average health situation of the local people in nearby East Meria alleviates, the weather condition of East Meria become pleasant. Without ruling out all other possible reasons that may account for the decline of the people who catch colds, the author cannot convince me that eating a substantial amount of beneficia can prevent colds.
In addition, the author recommend the daily use of nutritional supplement derived from the fish oil for it may be a good way to prevent colds. But without demonstrating clearly confirmed function of the nutritional supplement, it is presumptuous for the author to arrive at such conclusion before ruling out any other possible explanations. And it is entirely possible that other component may take account for the preventing of colds.
Even we assuming that the nutritional supplement is efficient to prevent colds, it does not necessarily mean that the absenteeism will be lower. Maybe catching colds is just a very good excuse for people to escape from the heavy burden of work and study. They can still find other substitutes for catching colds to keep away from schools and workplaces.
To sum up, the conclusion reached in the argument is invalid and misleading. To make it logically acceptable, the author should have to demonstrate that the survey is reliable and the nutritional supplement can efficiently prevent people from catching colds. Moreover, I would suspend my judgment about the credibility of the conclusion unless the author can provide more information that people would go to work and study if they don’t catch colds anymore.
