Thank you for your email. If you have questions on applying to the Master of Journalism programme, the following information may help.
TOEFL -
If you are providing TOEFL score, we’ll be able to retrieve your TOEFL score if you had put your TOEFL identification number in the MJ online application. It starts with 0000000 followed by 8 digits.
IELTS -
It’s fine to send copy of IELTS at the application stage. If you are admitted, you’ll be required to send us a certified copy OR the original.
References -
We normally do not contact the referees, and the application system does not automatically email the referees for references. There is no referee’s form. Ask your referees to write reference letters for you. If your referee is located overseas, you could ask your referee to email the recommendation letter to jmscmj@hku.hk, after you’ve completed the online application. The referees can be academic and/or professional ones.
Personal Statement -
No need to send a separate personal statement, as you are required to answer the two questions about yourself in the online application.
Supporting documents –
The required documents will be your university transcripts, certified copy of graduation certificate (not applicable to final year undergraduates) and IELTS or TOEFL score. You could be exempted from IELTS / TOEFL if you can provide a letter from your university certifying that your bachelor degree is taught in English. You could also provide writing samples (in English) and recommendation letters. You can enclose your CV, but do not send CDs / DVDs. You can post all the materials in one envelope to the JMSC office. No need to upload any documents online.
Qualifying writing test –
We’ll inform you whether you are shortlisted for the qualifying writing test after the closing date. The writing test is designed to explore candidates' English language skills, ability to present information in a clear and logical manner, and capacity for analytical thinking. It does not require prior preparation. The test will take place in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Hong Kong in mid-February. For overseas students, the qualifying exam could be done remotely via an honor system.
