4 The following appeared in a letter from a homeowner to a friend. "Of the two leading real estate firms in our town—Adams Realty andFitch Realty—Adams Realty is clearly superior. Adams has 40 real estate agents;in contrast, Fitch has 25, many of whom work only part-time. Moreover, Adams'revenue last year was twice as high as that of Fitch and included home salesthat averaged $168,000, compared to Fitch's $144,000. Homes listed with Adamssell faster as well: ten years ago I listed my home with Fitch, and it tookmore than four months to sell; last year, when I sold another home, I listed itwith Adams, and it took only one month. Thus, if you want to sell your homequickly and at a good price, you should use Adams Realty." Write a response in which you examine the stated and/orunstated assumptions of the argument. Be sure to explain how the argumentdepends on these assumptions and what the implications are for the argument ifthe assumptions prove unwarranted. 1. 数量,兼职 2. 高收入 3. 快,十年前和去年 4. 其他考察方面 In the letter, the homeowner compares Adam Reality(ARhenceforth) and Fitch Reality(FR henceforth) with the number agents, theworkforce property, revenue and velocity to sell home, then He/she makes theconclusion that AR is superior. It’s a plausible logic in which actually someassumptions which are unstated are questionable. Firstly, the author compares the number of agencies andassumes that the more agencies, the superior the company. Nevertheless, theamount doesn’t indicate the 实力 of a company. As a reason, the size of agency would be different. If thesize of AR is double smaller than FR’s size, which means the employers in agentof AR is less than that of FR, obviously in this case AR could serve moreclients and sell more houses in the same period of time. So the assumptionfinally turns out to be vague. Secondly, the author states that the revenue and theaverage price last year of AR is higher than FR. It seems cogent to prove thatAR is superior but in fact the author fails to consider the some vital points.He/she just compares the data of last year, ignores the sum of past years whichFR may higher than AR. Moreover, the revenue of estate firms also may influencedby the location and price fluctuation of houses. Maybe last year, the areawhere FR predominately covered has just been developed and the price there islower. But it’s with great potential of augmentation in the future. So judgingthe estate firms with the revenue in a short-term and the average price are notconvincing. Thirdly, the author assumed a faster selling ten yearsago of AR than selling last year in FR displays the superiority of AR. It’scertainly ridiculous. The speed of sale are influenced by many factors whichcan’t be controlled by the company, including the density of population aroundthe agencies, the quality of the house itself, the price of the house, theneeds of market. It may be varies from zone to zone, from time to time, fromperson to person. Unless the author take these factors into consideration, thecomparison is ineffective. Furthermore, the author assumes comparison on these 4fields could thoroughly evaluate the power of 2 firms. In fact, despite those, many other fields should also be considered such as, if the service of theiremployment is integral, if the employers know how to persuade the purchase, ifthe company has a good comments from other clients, etc. In this case, theauthor’s conclusion is to too rough to make it convincing. To sum up, the author fails to establish a causalrelationship between his proofs and the conclusion. To strengthen the argument, the author ought to provide more numerous and more complete evidences topersuade his/her friend that AR is superior than FR. 全部用时50分钟
