1. Students should bring a certain skepticism to whatever they study.They should question what they are taught instead of accepting it passively.

2. There is no such thing as purely objective observation. All observation is subjective; it is always guided by the observer's expectations or desires.

3. Academic disciplines have become so specialized in recent years that scholars' ideas reach only a narrow audience. Until scholars can reach a wider audience, their ideas will have little use.

life is just like a game. The problem is that it's not how you play the game, it's how the game plays you.

1.true.
first, there so much unknown in this world. Only doubts, suspicion and the consequent probing can make more unclear ones become clear ones.

second. knowledge taught in universities that is regarded as classic were in history most wierd, or against orthodoxy. It is by our pioneers that we make progress in our civilization. Students should be taught to suspect the authority so as to develop thier own minds and personality.

third, it is by no means that students should always suspect, without keeping regard to the present fruits of our pioneers. Skeptism, to some extent, does no good to our society and it distract our comuunity cohesion. We should find a balance between these two sides

well, i would like to talk about the third topic :)

FOR and AGAINST;
1. little audience is not only caused by the specialized academic terms but also the abstract explanation of some scientists.(for)
i. e. this problem is compounded by the tendency of some professors who seem to do their best to overcomplicate simple subjects.  The reasons include issues of power and the exclusion of those outside their specialized field of knowledge in order to add to their preceived prestige and make it seems that no one understands the subject as well as they do.
i.e. feild of philosophy, literature, education, etc.
i.e. some professors publish books only because of its positive influence of their promotion.
2.  the nature of science and tech necessarily limits the number of people who can really understand it.(against)
3. only in some applied areas, for instance medicine, the more people who can understand it the more meaningful it will be. for example preventative measures against AIDS.if people can not understand the fundamental causes of AIDS, people will be afraid of it and many patients will not get help from society.because of people's fears.
but we cannot simply say that science is only valuable if it  reaches large audience.the statement is too absolute.

today i call one foreign teacher here for correcting my writing, actually the first opion is his :P
i have to confess that the GRE writing is really really really damn hard.
but, beginning is always the hardest, lets try and try and try, i do believe that we could conqure it before MARCH15, 2003 !
to becky: next time i will paste some examples here. like examples in NEW ENGLISH CONCEPT 4, and other websites. :)
be happy, don't worry. we will MAKE IT!

让我来试试1.的提纲:
position:I would agree that sudents should bring a certain skepticism to whatever they study.They should question what they are taught instead of accepting it passively.
A.No matter how the knowledge that is classic and is proved,however ,we should be encouraged to be skeptic to them ,thus we can impetus our thinking ablity.
B.If students are only to accept knowledge passively,students will lose their creative ablity and progress ambitious.
C.But there is a balance between acception and skepticism because it is be commanded by society,and if one is skeptic to everything so much,it will hinder him to make progress!
