TOPIC: ISSUE66 - "As people rely more and more on technology to solve problems, the ability of humans to think for themselves will surely deteriorate."
WORDS: 343          TIME: 00:35:46          DATE: 2007-8-24 15:04:37

I fundamently agree with the speaker's first contention that people more and more use technology to cope with problems confronted nowadays. However, I strongly disagree with second contention since the humankinds' capability to think and ponder for themselves will not be deteriorate or even undermined by the technology.

Technology, products of humankind's sagacity and endeavor, will not impede the time, scope for human's thinking, nor the deepth. As we all see computers shrinking in size, increasing in power, and declining in price. We also see the rapid expansion of telecommunication networking at reducing price. All these facilities render us extricated from dedicating oursevlese to copping trifle things such as save certain information and  classify them. As a result, we have more time to think over more important questions for ourselves.

Next, with the help of technology, we are confronted with more things to think. We have to consider how to relevate the newly invented machines' efficiency; We have to find a best way to address the problem coming from the latest new method to make power using the heat and light of the sun. What is interesting is that more and more fantastic concept stems from the new method or technology.

Futhermore, with the develpement of technology, we also have to consider all the questions more deeply. The history of the developement of technology is just like new, better things replace the old, relatively "bad" things. Here, bad means the traits such as time-consuming, less efficient, sooner or later will be left out and left behind by humanbeings.  If we want to emiliorate the living conditions of humankind, and we want to sovle all these existing troublesome problems, the only way to realize our collective aim is by deeply thinking. To these degree, technology serves as the impetus for deep thinking.

Technology ostensibly facilitate our material lives, while essentially put people into a circumstance that people are encouraged to think more often, widely and deeply. Interestingly, technology is the production of human's thinking, on the contrary, technology precipitate the development of human's thinking.

TOPIC: ARGUMENT112 - The following proposal was raised at a meeting of the Franklin City Council.
"Franklin Airport, which is on a bay, is notorious for flight delays. The airport management wants to build new runways to increase capacity but can only do so by filling in 900 acres of the bay. The Bay Coalition organization objects that filling in the bay will disrupt tidal patterns and harm wildlife. But the airport says that if it is permitted to build its new runways, it will fund the restoration of 1,000 acres of wetlands in areas of the bay that have previously been damaged by industrialization. This plan should be adopted, for it is necessary to reduce the flight delays, and the wetlands restoration part of the plan ensures that the bay's environment will actually be helped rather than hurt."

This argument  recommends that the Franklin citizen adopt the plan to build new runways to cope with the filght delays. To support the recommendation, the author points out that a newly built renway can increase capacity of the airport. He also cites that the airport management would fund the restoration of 1,000 acres of wetlands in areas of the bay that habe previously been damaged by industrialization compensate for the filling in 900 acres of the bay. However, close scrutiny of this evidence reveals that it lends little support to the recommendation.

First of all, the argument unpresumptuously assumes that flight delays is attibutable to inadequate capacity. Yet the author provides no evidence to substantiate this assumption. Lacking such evidence it is entirely possible that actually the flight delays is irrelevant to the airpot's capacity. Since Franklin Airport is on a bay, perhaps it is the bad weather in Franklin Airport that should be blame for the delays. If this is the case, the author cannot confidently draw any conclusion that building new runways is wise to eliminate flight delays.

Next, even if the inadequate capacity is actually to blame for the flight delays. Funding the restoration of 1,000 acres of wetland in areas of the bay that have previously been damaged by industrialization is never a convincing compensate for filling in 900 acres of the bay. It is entirely possible that after some many years, the 1,000 acres of wetland cannot be restored any more. The author cannot convince me that it is benefitable for the wetland.

Even if the wetlands can be restored, it does not follow that we should sacrifice th 900 acres of the bay.The author cannot convince that the sacrificing the 900 acres of the bay to funding the wetlands is more benefit for the city.

In sum, the author cannot justify his or her voting recommendation on the basis of  the scant evidence provided in the argument. To bolster the recommendation the author must provide better evidence that the inadequate of capacity of the Airport is the very reason for flight delays, and sacrificing the 900 acres of the bay is deserved for the fund for the restoration of wetlands.
