Issue56. “Government should focus more on solving the immediate problems oftoday rather than trying to solve the anticipated problems of the future”

Is the short-term profit more favorablethan the long-term one? The speaker claims that the government shouldconcentrate on solving the impending and emerging problems rather than theproblems in the future. From my own perspective, I do not suggest the abovestatement because a tendency onimmediate problems in making the policies by government will lead to an imbalancedresult which is unfavorable and even harmful to the whole society.

Undeniably, the immediate problems suchas severe unemployment, economics regression and the lack of social stability areneeded to be tackled swiftly. Among the many ambitions of the government, guaranteeing the well-beings of the masses is on the top of the list. Theadministration management of the government is just the bellwethers of thepublic, and their decisions should base on whatthe contemporary society needs. There are several cases for the problems solving of government mightbe regarded as exemplifications. A case in point is the swift decisions ofFederal Reserve System and United States Congress after the financial crisis in2008 by instilling 700 billion dollars into the crucial business market.Another examples might be lauded is the consistent measures taken by the Hong Kong government tocombat for the spread of deadly SARS in 2003. By the rapid decision of the leadership and the prompt executionof the masses, the misfortunes can be controlled and prevented turning intofurther disasters. Otherwise, like the belated rescuing in earthquake mightlead to an unimaginable catastrophe, the tardy solutions to the currentproblems which are at stake would be in vain.

Furthermore, nowadays the government isfocusing much on the immediate problems, because of the politicalconsiderations. Like the countries in democratic society, every out-party areexerting themselves for the social development for satisfying the needs ofcitizens by making further urban infrastructure or bringing the economicprosperity for the purpose of getting adequate chairs in the congressconsecutively in the next election period. The government with boom is going tobe advocated rather than a recession one, and it is decided no further than acurrent society with utilitarianism.

However, we should not overemphasize onthe short-term problems, and neglecting the possible and latentissues because the chronic problems are alwaysfar more precarious when they become realized. The government should have apenetrating sight to see the potential risks and tackle them step by step, otherwise a doomed juggernaut will be soon emerged. For example, were theforesight of the United States government more profound, the early andpreventative treatment to the overheated local economy would be taken in toeffect. What’s more, the current cabinet in the government should also regardlong-term advantages highly in respect to the short-term one, or else theso-called elites in charge of the nation might be considered as suffering inmyopia. In present days, the debate in exploiting the non-renewableenergy resource unrestrainedly sets tonguewagging in the public, as theconcept of sustainable development is rife. Certainly the use of the petroleumand natural gas would greatly improve our current living standard and make the whole society into a further improvement, but the leaders aresuffering from the myopia by using the sources unlimitedly that neglect toconsider our offspring’s well-being. Such selfish phenomena can be observed inthe splitting ozone layer. The much petroleum we used or the exhaust gas weemitted, the worse living conditions for our children. A responsible governmentshould make the balance for the well-beings of the current generation andlatter generation by comprehensivestudies beforehand, otherwise I would boldlypredict the seeming prosperities like today’s OPEC are evanescent.

From what has been discussed above, thegovernments need to focus on solving the immediate problems with considerationof unseen problems in the future. By comprehensively dealing with all the problems the countries are facing, thegovernment will not only get supportfrom the masses but also set up the groundfor the sustainable development for our children in order to let the offspringremembering their feat.
