Tradition and modernization are incompatible. One must choose between them.

With the development of technology and society, our life is changing all the time. It means that our life is more and more modernized. Does this mean modernization will take the place of tradition because of the incompatibility between them? Since the two coexist well in our society, the answer is absolutely not. Therefore, I disagree with the speaker.

To begin with, tradition is the base modernization, most of which depend on tradition. For example, the traditional education is teaching and study, both of which are used for most of educational institutions. With the appearance of multiple media and distant communication, the traditional blackboard can be replaced by the screen of television and computer, which increase the efficiency of the class. Consequently distant education becomes possible. Students can study through radio, television, or even internet. They have no need to go to a certain classroom, or even have no need to study at a certain time for those who study through the internet. Then the dream that listen to the lectures from the Harvard University can be achieved. These illustrate that tradition cannot be replaced by modernization, which could make the traditional way more convenient and effective.

In addition, tradition and modernization can coexist at the same time and in the same society. The way of communication is an excellent example that can support this point of view. If you want to communicate with someone, you can choose either the conventional ways or the modernization ones--that is, both letters and e-mails can reach your intent. Of course, so does many other ways, such as instant communication system. All of them have their own characteristics. E- Mail is more efficient and convenient than the traditional letter. You can rapidly and accurately communicate with your friends or colleagues in spite of where hi or she is. On the other hand, many people prefer to conventional letters, which is a material thing that people can touch, or even smell it, and every letter is different. Handwriting itself means something personal. Many of us prefer to letters, compared with the e-mails which differs little. Both letter and e-mail have its loyal user, and there exists no incompatibility between them. The similar examples can also be found in other field. So, tradition and modernization can coexist harmonious without any great conflicts.

Furthermore, it is true that both tradition and modernization are relevant. When we look backward of the history, we can realize that most of current traditions are the past modernization. Then we could infer that current modernization may be future tradition. For instance, telephone, which considered as modernized way before tens of years, never be thought as a modern way of communication at present. With the development of society, traditions which have less value will be instant by new ones gradually. But the condition is not so poor that we must choose only one between them.

To sum up, most traditions and modernizations are not incompatible, and we also no need to choose one between them. Just use what you prefer, and time is the best touchstone for both of them.
