1  research对知识探索和社会的好处。
2  research的结果是不可知的。
3  一些研究成本太大，不值得投资；应把一部分钱投在研发无法解决的社会问题上。

I concede with the speaker in the point that investment in research can bring much benefit to the development of a society, especially in the respect of the solution of long-term social problems. However, the statement overestimates the use of research by holding a positive attitude on all occasions concerning the investment on research programs, some of which may not be wise choices.

First I would say that most research works should be encouraged in that they not only satisfy human cravings for knowledge, but also work out solutions in dealing with enduring social and economical problems. It is through scientific research that we know how the planets orbit around the sun within the solar system, how the rain drops and snow falls generate and come into our vision, and how the genes of our parents decide the inherited features of our bodies. It is also due to the merit of the researchers that we are living so conveniently with varies means of transportation, with cellular phones and personal computers which was unthinkable before the technological innovation period of 20th century.

Accompanied with the amazing traits above, however, research also has a common feature-its unpredictable results. We cannot say the consequence of a particular research before we actually devote ourselves to the course. We may not know the exact discovery of an experiment or an investigation, which are the very objection we are in search of during the research. In this respect, the speaker is probably wrong to mention the likely results of research because we even do not know what the actual results might be, let alone to decide whether it is controversial, or further,  whether it is worth investing in. But the mere fact that the outcome of research is hard to foretell cannot prevent us from carrying on with our work, for it is the only way we could understand the universe as well as ourselves, and find possible ways to improve the well-being of our society.

Given all these reasons why we should put in money on the research work, however, it must be realized that due to the scarcity of the resources we can apply on earth, it is not "always a good investment" to spend money on research. Firstly, some research programs cost too much human and natural resources, while promising a too vague prospect of practical use. The money could entire possibly be used to help dealing with unemployment, to enhance the quality of education, and to offer financial aids to the desperately poor and disabled. Secondly, some of the social problems cannot be solved by research, or at least cannot in the near future, such as drug addiction, divorce, and violation. Therefore we must spend money on the judicial systems, the ethical education of the society, and other relevant areas, where the money can surely get a better payoff. In a word, because of the limits of the utility of research and the limits of the total resources we have, sometimes investing in research is not good.

To conclude, it is a desirable choice to invest in research most of the time, since research can access humanity closer to the truth of nature, while at the same time making achievements in the progressing of human society. But it is not always the choice, in cases where the research work is too expensive while proving too little use, and where it is much more efficient to deal with social problems in other ways.
