Issue 214
"Society should identify those children who have special talents and abilities and begin training them at an early age so that they can eventually excel in their areas of ability. Otherwise, these talents are likely to remain undeveloped."
Outline
1.Theoretically speaking, special training for those gifted is beneficial
2.As we put it into practice, do we have a valid criterion according to which we can effectively find out talented ones?
3.Moreover, do we have a good method so as to balance between those gifted children’s talents and interest, to better promote their overall development?
Childhood education has a large influence on both the development of the individual and the future progress of the society. In this sense, the speaker’s assertion that society should provide those talented children with special training so as to better promote their development is quite reasonable. However, there are still more problems to consider as we put this into practice.
Theoretically speaking, it can be beneficial for those talented children if society can provide them with specially designed training. As we know, education will be much more effective if it takes individual abilities and needs into consideration. Yet generally speaking, current school education is usually designed based on the develop order of the majority of the children, that is, those common ones. As a result, talents of gifted children can hardly be exploited. If these children can enjoy specially designed education which is suitable for their gifts and abilities, they can probably go far beyond their classmates and fully realize their potential.
Nevertheless, there’re many problems as we putting this will into reality. On the one hand, special education for special students is based on the classification of all the children. Therefore, we should first identify those gifted ones from others. And this is not an easy task. How to identify these talented children? Is there really a clear board between those who are gifted and those who are not? If there are, do we have a valid criterion according to which we can effectively distinguish these two kinds of children? In fact, certain gifts are usually hard to discover at an early age. A child who starts speaking much later than his or her peers may eventually turns out to be a successful linguist or a writer. A child who fails in his or her first arithmetic test in elementary school may show extraordinary ability in mathematics as he or she grows up. In short, under many circumstance, it is very hard to give a definite conclusion of the talents of a little child unless he or she shows it to us years later.
On the other hand, if the gifted children have been identified, how to train them? Are we sure we can reach the balance between gift training and comprehensive fostering? Education should not aim at providing the society with only physicists, pianists, architects, and so on. Education should be responsible to make the student a comprehensively developed person. However, former experience shows that special education for children with special talents usually fail to reach this goal. Both the parents and schools care little about the overall development of these children, and due to their high expectation for the children, they always focus their attention on the domains which their children are talented in. As a result, these children have to devote most of their times on one certain area. Worse still, they cannot choose the area themselves. These children’s majors are determined before they form their interest, and it is possible that they do not have enough time to dig into other domains which they may interest in. Isn’t it a tragedy!
To sum up, it can be beneficial for both the children and the society if gifted children can be identified and educated properly, yet so far, we still lack an effective method in both identification and training, perhaps there is still a long way to go.
