TOPIC: ISSUE147 - "Tradition and modernization are incompatible. One must choose between them."
WORDS: 477 TIME: 上午 12:24:53 DATE: 2006-12-17
The speaker contends that we have to choose one between tradition and modernization for they are incompatible. Considering except some cases such as architecture, however, I would not agree with the speaker for several cases involving arts, education and science.
The first compelling reason I would like to oppose the speaker is that tradition is always compatible with modernization in the field of arts. For instance, with the development of music, the folk songs are composed within more and more popular and modern elements, leading the songs more attractive among adolescent and adults. Wang Lihong, one of the most ingenious singers in China, composed and sang a song named "Huatiancuo", which contains the Chinese traditional local folk music of Kunqu and the modern popular music arts like rap. Being more than simply a kind of music for entertainment, the combinational music serves to preserve the traditional culture and to hand down the conventions such as ceremony and ritual, considering the traditional culture is not prevailing any more and some even tend to disappear. The field of arts is replete of such examples, like painting and so on. Therefore, with the combination of the tradition and modernization, the culture tends more likely to be preserved and more prevalent in modern society.
Moreover, another compelling reason for my argument is that only the integration of tradition and modernization can assure the education and science advance remarkably. For example, since we have a long history of pedagogy, it is obvious stupid to discard the conventional methods and personal experience of teaching, which plays an important role in schooling. Instead, we apply what we learn from the traditional schooling to promote the reformation of education. In addition, when it comes to science, although innovation is encouraged yet it depends largely on the basement of conventional theory. As we can see, lots of modern inventions derive from the reforming of the former device. Thus, the tradition and modernization not only are compatible but also interplay with each other.
Nevertheless, to some extent, tradition and modernization does not cooperate very well when it comes to architecture. As a metropolis like Beijing is developing so fast, the traditional buildings expose partly to be destroyed in the old city zone and new buildings are constructed also very quickly. Nonetheless, the new buildings do not match the old ones when they both are part of the city, which leading the city loses its beauty of harmony.
In sum, it is not surprising that tradition and modernization exist in many fields like arts, education, and science and so on. They interact with each other: tradition is conducive to advance the modernization by providing established experience and methods while modernization help to preserve and hand down the traditional culture. Except in some aspects like architecture, we look forward to combine the tradition and modernization to serve the development of all sorts of science.
