The speaker overstates the impact of technologies on social customs and ethics. Although we admit that technologies bring about lots of changes to our daily life and make our life better, they cannot determine social customs and ethics, which we are adapted to for long time in history and are passed generation by generation. Thus, I disagree with the statement in some respects.

Admittedly, with rapid progress of science and technology, people's styles of life and social customs are changing in several respects. For instance, as the extensive application of technologies and skills, the new way of communicating changes people's habit of communicating. The advanced mobile phone and e-mail replace posting letters and become the main communicative way, which people can enjoy convenience and efficiency brought by technologies. Additionally, new technology also changes people's values of consumption. For instance, people tend to pursue what they want online without going outdoors and buy goods with e-cash or credit cards. Thus, based on the above facts, technologies indeed act as role of influence our life and to some extent transform our social customs in some respects.

However, one cannot exaggerate the importance of technologies on social customs and ethics. As we know, social customs are established for a long time and considered as unwritten law. Technologies can influence them in some aspects but fail to determine them completely. For instance, as development of computerized information, people can easily read others' academics paper through internet and the action of such plagiarism is still considered as illegal although people can very easily copy them. Such actions still suffer being denounced and are not permitted. As to ethics, it is a kind of moral principle or value. It is a common sense that ethical value towards what is bad or good cannot change no matter how advanced technologies develop. No matter how advanced technologies of nuclear or chemical weapons, wars are still not welcomed by people. Technologies never become the tool of measure to determine the standard of ethics. Furthermore, we are adopt to some traditional social customs and ethics for a long time and special meanings implied in the procedure of keeping to customs and ethics are beyond themselves, so to this extent they cannot be determined by technologies. For instance, as old practice Chinese people still prefer to have supper together and watching TV programs with their family members during spring festival although there are many ways to celebrate. People wish to enjoy happiness with their family at that day, which cannot be changed by technologies. Last but the least, ethics concerning on business, media press and politics can serve to regulate moral standard of people who are creators and developers of technologies. If such ethics had been determined by technologies as the speaker claimed, everyone driven by their individual profit without considering others’ develop technologies as they like, which of course do detriments to our society and development of technologies would lose control. Then the significance of technologies will become meaningless.

Consequently, technologies serve to influence people's daily life but fail to determine social customs and ethics. We benefit more from the application of technologies at the meantime we still eager to enjoy pleasures brought by keep to social customs and ethics. Thus, we should not let technologies determine our ethics.
