"Reform is seldom brought about by people who are concerned with their own reputation and social standing. Those who are really in earnest about reforming a government, an educational system, or any other institution must be willing to be viewed with disdain by the rest of the world."

There is a debate over whether reform is brought by people who are concerned with their own reputation or people who are willing to be viewed with disdain by the rest of world. . This issue is a complex and controversial one and different people hold different views due to their distinct backgrounds , that’s to say , which one , the former or the latter , is quite a personal matter which depends on so many factors such as age , people’s psychological maturity , their personal understanding towards reform and so on . Therefore , there is not a universal answer to this question , and whether one choice take precedence over the other quite depend on the specific situation . The decision , nevertheless , is not an easy one to make . In spite of varieties of concerns over this particular issue , I insist that in most cases , it is these people , who are seldom concerned with their honor , are really in earnest about reforming a government , an article system , or any other institution .
Reform , in all respects such as political , article , as well as science , will effect interests of certain social groups or individuals , and thus it will surely meet great objects from them . Take the French revolution for example , the reformers were pushed to guillotine , and so were most reforms now and then . Giordano Bruno , philosopher and scientist , who championed the Copernican system of astronomy which place sun , not the earth , at the center of the solar system , was burnt at a stake 408 years ago for the crime of heresy which he opposed the stultifying authority of the church. .
Another reason is that , in most cases , people’s receiving new things is not an immediate course , it is , however , a gradual one . Fancal , who is now regarded as a maestro ,was poor and pedantic throughout his life . After gradually understanding his works , people now show great respect to him . There is no exception that once a reform is newly carried out , the majority of people will show disputation towards it instead of reward it , and thus take most reformers into an embarrassed position .
Only to accepted by most people , however , can reform succeed . Reforms should overcome all barriers to make efforts to gain support from people as many as possible . Thus , people who are think much about his own reputation and social status will make his own way in no way . To the opposite , solely reformers that are favoring to be viewed with disdain will end in success.
Reform , whether precedence over reality or effect some individual or social groups’ interests will of course be viewed with disdain . Only these people who are the most persistent will insist to take our society to a new step and will finally gain respect from people.
In conclusion , it is the history that witness the definitely fact that it is those who are seldom concerned about their social status and willing to be viewed with disdain can serve as a catalyst for reform and pull our society to a high level .
