ISSUE99 - "In any realm of life-whether academic, social, business, or political-the only way to succeed is to take a practical, rather than an idealistic, point of view. Pragmatic behavior guarantees survival, whereas idealistic views tend to be superceded by simpler, more immediate options."

words: 630        time consuming: 65mins

提纲:
we live on the basis of the reality. Nevertheless, idealism is also indispensible which spurs us to higher levels that idealists cannot begin to imagine.
1.       1.pragmatism that really counts in the way to success.
Warren Buffet

2.       2.extremely sticking to pragmatism can retard the depth and width of your way of thought, thus limiting your motivation to realize your ideal.
study and research for example

3.       3.pragmatic and idealistic behaviors are not mutually exclusive to each other, the best choice for any realm of life lies in acting in pragmatic behavior, while holding idealistic views as guidance and motivation.
Obama

Human lives could be regarded as the process of striving between reality and ideality. The speaker asserts that the only way towards success is to be a member of pragmatism rather than idealism in whatever realms. I agree with the speaker insofar that we truly need pragmatism because we live on the basis of the reality. Nevertheless, idealism is also indispensible which spurs us to higher levels that idealists cannot begin to imagine.

“Practice is the only criteria that can test any truth". As said by the great philosopher Marx. Any ideal must be based on the realistic practice to realize its merits. Living is experiencing the more profound interaction between human beings and reality leads to better understanding of the rules of the realistic environment we depend on. In the realm of business for instance, to most businessmen, the way to maximize the revenue is what they only care about. Therefore their everyday life is closely related to the sales quotas, the relationship with other companies, the deadlines of the products or other trivial matters, even each long-term investment they have made is as well focused on the anticipated income. Warren Buffett, who was once the wealthiest man in the world, is recognized, to some extent, as the greatest American investor and philanthropist. However, his wealth is also accumulated from every coin he gained in such a realistic world. Profoundly familiar with the principles of the market, his business acumen leads him to ultimate huge success. Did he have the ideal to be the richest man ever? We surely don't know, but there is no denying that it is his pragmatism that really counts in his way to success.

However, extremely sticking to pragmatism can retard the depth and width of your way of thought, thus limiting your motivation to realize your ideal. As Napoleon once put it: "The soldier who don't want to be the marshal isn’t a good soldier", which stressed the significance of idealism. Here, let's take study and research for example. For the part of students, the marks of the courses are of utmost importance while for scholars, the quantities of their thesis are essential. To be realistic, they may be forced do fabrication or cheating to fulfill the short-term goal which is likely to determine their graduation or promotion. Pragmatism can be the huge obstacle to their motivation of climbing the high mountains lying ahead resulting in the short-sighted view of their own. People of idealism are not like that. What matters is the ultimate goal lying in their inner heart to conquer nature through their unremitting efforts rather than the so-called position of professor. No matter how difficult the way is, they will hold on to the last.

Finally, In much more situations, pragmatic and idealistic behaviors are not mutually exclusive to each other, the best choice for any realm of life lies in acting in pragmatic behavior, while holding idealistic views as guidance and motivation. One apt illustration involves Mr. Obama, who is the first American president with black skin. In the early times of his campaign, he was facing the predicament of lacking sponsorship in the battle. However, he had never given up in such a realistic matter and took much of his time in accumulating money from various businessmen. Simultaneously, His ideal--"Yes we can" and "It's time to change" won the support of the public and in return, brought lots of backings for him. His winning in the election should largely attribute to his perfect combination of pragmatism and idealism.

In conclusion, pragmatism indeed guarantees survival while idealistic view is also indispensible as what have shown above. Pragmatic and idealistic behaviors should be combined together to help form a efficient and fairly possible means to live a better life.
