COVID-19. UPDATE

The New York Court of Appeals today announced that the New York State Bar Examination will not be administered on July 28-29, 2020 as previously scheduled. Click here to read the press release from the Court of Appeals dated March 27, 2020.

The State Board of Law Examiners will announce the new date for the exam and the dates for the application filing period as soon as it becomes available.

Further information will be posted on this website when available. Additional information regarding the impact of COVID-19 on the July 2020 bar exam is available on NCBE's website at: http://www.ncbex.org/ncbe-covid-19-updates/

The Board’s office is closed until further notice as a result of the ongoing COVID-19 crisis. Staff are not presently available to answer phone calls. However, the Board continues to closely monitor the situation. The health and safety of applicants, our staff and the proctors who administer the bar exam are of paramount importance to the Board.

The grading of the February 2020 UBE in New York is progressing despite the crisis. However, due to the closure of the Board's office, the release of the February 2020 UBE results may be delayed beyond the usual time period (that is, on or before May 1st). All candidates who sat for the February 2020 UBE should monitor their emails and this website for any updated information.

最近美国的一次市场调查：２０８名执业律师和２４００名法律用户；问他们因疫情影响，生意如何？

According to the lawyers surveyed, 95 percent of surveyed firms are still accepting new clients. However:

• About 81 percent of surveyed firms have seen decreased revenues
  
  • Of those, 27 percent report their revenue has decreased by more than half since the start of the pandemic
  • More than 18 percent of firms were forced to shrink their staffs through layoffs and furloughs
    
• Just 5 percent of law firms have increased marketing expenses during the pandemic

我们律所说：正在考虑如何重开；会在办公室配备个人防护用品、严格执行 social distancing；分批让律师回去。但如果雇员有个人原因不想回去，可以继续在家远程上班。其中一条是如果员工乘公共交通工具上班，可以继续留在家里。

今天美国期货市场上的石油的价格都是负值了。律师的就业市场也不乐观。

今年的 lateral hiring 至少在律师楼这块儿会很少。去 in-house 的另说。Recruiter 的收入会减少。2L, 3L students would face a reality check for their career choices.

Precisely! Law firms may not have much liquidity (cash) if they heavily depend on the monthly payments from clients to pay for the law firm's operation.

Even mega firm of Dentons has some cost-cutting moves on the horizon. It is reported that the 2019 bonuses, which were due to be paid in full in April 2020, will be delayed in part. The firm is paying 50% of attorneys’  2019 bonuses on schedule and delaying the second half until the second half of 2020.

Folks, even Dentons is short on cash!

如果身上背着学贷房贷，那真的太惨了

同意。据说申请减缓还贷款利息的申请也暴涨了。另外最近三周接近一千六百万（！）美国人申请首次失业救济，失业率彪升已成定局。美国有一半的家庭，银行存款几乎没有。没有政府救济，能否挺过俩月的零收入，真不好说。

相对而言，华裔的经济状况好多了。不过餐饮业和其它服务性行业受冲击巨大。能不能熬过去，就看是否资金雄厚了。
