Practicality is now our great idol, which all powers and talents must serve. Anything that is not obviously practical has little value in today's world.

Many thoughts and methods which are used in nearly every field of the whole world verify the point that the practicality is now our great idol which I agree with the speaker. But, the speaker's unnecessarily boarder assertion that all powers and talents must serve practically and anything that is not obviously practical has little value in the world which I do not agree. My points will be discussed below.

I completely concede that practicality has indeed become a great idol in almost every field. First, in the education fields, the practicality is quite popular which is brought by a famous person. John Dewey, an American famous practical educationist, founded practical education and given out some famous thermos such as "education is life", "children as the central". The practical education changed American old education and reformed new education which have become not only the kernel of the American education but also popular in the whole world since early 90's. Second, in the area of economy, practicality is also favored by most company especially in the western world. Bell-labs is the typical example. The bell-labs consider markets as direction: they research after they investigate the demand of the market; then they put their products into the market and make money; then they use the money to do more research to satisfy the demands. They use practically ideology to make a high quality of cycle. Third, practicality is also be used for daily life. A recent report reported that practical furniture is popular in those days. The advantages of this furniture can be moved, folded and dismantled easily. They are fit for the people who moving from one home to another very often and especially fit for the youth because they are cheaper.

However, meanwhile, there has been a growth of interest among many people in unpractical things such as religion, arts, music, ect. All of these unpractical things also make great effort to us. For instance, there is a famous doctrine in Christianity (and I paragraph): human beings come to the world just for atone. Believing this doctrine, the Christian try their best effort by using powers and talents to make merit for the world. The contribution made by the unpractical is indirect. Therefore, not all the powers and talents are serving practicality and not unpractical things is invaluable in the world.

Moreover, the thing which is not obviously practical in the past or now may be quite valuable in the future. The typical representative the scientific research, especially some researches about the outer space. The costly researches seem unpractical and have little value. But in the long future when the earth is out of resource and space, the human need new star to settle and the project cannot done in that time. The merit of the outer space researches have numerous merit which cannot be counted. Another example is the study of history which is also unpractical but has great merit to us. The study of history can help us acquire experiments, recognize the today's world, and even predict the future by learning the past. A more example is archaeology. To study the fossil and research the reason of extinction of other species can do contribution to human in some extends, such as length the existence of human.

In sum that I agree the speaker's broad assertion that practicality is the mainstream in the today's world, but I do not think they will take up all the powers and talents of human cause there are also many unpractical things attract human which is also requiring efforts. In addition, the things that are not obviously practical may have little value now, but the merit of them will show up in the future and valuable to today's world.
