Issue152
The only responsibility of corporate executives, provided they stay within the law, is to make as much money as possible for their companies.
让步
2.Executive

Are the corporate executives only responsible for making money as much as possible for their companies, within the law? The speaker believes so. When it comes to the basic function of a company, it takes immediately to our mind raising money. As the leader of a company, the executive is inevitably thought to be the one who are making money by hook or crook. However, as an individual, the corporate executive also has his or her own social responsibilities. Moreover, the company, under the management of the executive, burdens the "social responsibilities of business".

To begin with, the fundamental responsibility, as it is the professional responsibility, of the corporate executives is to making increasingly more money for their companies. Indisputably,in a free-enterprise, private-property system, a corporate executive is an employee of the owners of the business. He has direct responsibility to his employers. That responsibility is to conduct the business in accordance with their desires, which generally will be to make as much money as possible while conforming to the basic rules of the society, those embodied in law. For example, as the CEO of a high-tech firm, one has to make everyday plan for their engineers to explore new softwares which could help the firm ahead of their competitors. Besides, it is a manager's duty to hire excellent chefs, train their employees and make out fleasible propaganda strategies for alluring more customers to their restaurant. In either case, the key point is that, in his or her capacity as a corporate executive, the manager is the agent of the individuals who own the corporation or share the stocks, and his primary responsibility is to them and to the company.

However, as a member of the society, the corporate executive also has individual responsiblities. For instance, he voluntarily recognizes or assumes such responsibilities–to his family, his conscience, his feelings of charity, his church, his clubs, his city, his country. He may feel impelled by these responsibilities to devote part of his income to causes he regards as worthy, to refuse to work for particular corporations, even to leave his job, for example, to join the social charity work. In these respects he is acting as a principal, not an agent; he is spending his own money or time or energy, not the money of his employers or the time or energy he has contracted to devote to their purposes. On this personal ground, an executive could, or even should bear some responsibilities.

Further, the executive, in his capacity as businessman, should take the "social responsibility of business". What does that mean? Without pure rhetoric, it must mean that he or she is to act in some way that is not in the interest of his employers, but the society. For example, by refraining from increasing the price of the product, the executive has a responsibility to contribute to the social objective of preventing inflation, even though a price increase would be in the best interests of the corporation. Or that to make expenditures on reducing pollution beyond the amount that is in the best interests of the corporation or that is required by law in order to contribute to the social objective of improving the environment. Or that, at the expense of corporate profits, he is to hire "hardcore" unemployed instead of better qualified available workmen to contribute to the social objective of reducing poverty. In each of these cases, the corporate executive would be sacrificing the company's money for a general social interest, which seems to be inepitude ostensibly. Yet, the result moves into the opposite direction. It may perhaps that the government will lend some economical priorities; their social image will undergo amelioration; their employees will exhibit a strong cohesion. For these reasons mentioned above, when the social interest is confronted with the interest of business, an effective and competent executive should place the weight on the former one.

In conclusion, it is the basic duty for a corporate executive to raise money for his or her company. However, there should be other personal responsibilities as well. In the final conclusion, insofar as to raise the price to customers, the executive is being responsible for his own career, while, insofar as to be in accord with his "social responsibility" reduce returns to stockholders, he is standing on the ground of the society. For the long-lasting development of the company, so as to the society, each corporate executive should take precedence for our public interest.

Are the corporate executives only responsible for making money as much as possible for their companies within the law? The speaker believes so (这句真直白,不如说你不believe了). When it comes to the basic function of a company, it takes immediately to our mind raising money (这句的语法很奇怪,如果接上句的话:In common sense, the basic function of a company is to raise money.). As the leader of a company, the executive is inevitably thought (considered) to be the one who is making money by hook or crook. However, as an individual, the corporate executive also has his or her own social responsibilities. Moreover, the company, which is under the management of the executive, burdens the "social responsibilities of business".

To begin with, the fundamental responsibility as the professional responsibility (这里感觉一个fundamental就可以了,那个professional很少用在responsibility前面吧) of the corporate executives is to make increasingly much more money for their companies. Indisputably, in the free-enterprise, private-property system, a corporate executive is the employee of the owners of the business. He has direct responsibility to his employers. That responsibility is to conduct the business in accordance with their desires, which (这个which是指responsibility还是desires?如果是desires,后面的动词是are) generally are to make as much money as possible while conforming to the basic rules of the society, including laws. For example, as the CEO of a high-tech firm, one has to make everyday plan for the engineers to explore new software which could help the firm be ahead of their competitors. Besides, it is the manager's duty to hire excellent chefs, train their(前面单数,后面复数,their到底指的什么) employees and make out feasible propaganda strategies for alluring more customers to their restaurant (! . In either case, the key point is that, on his or her capacity as a corporate executive, the manager is the agent of the individuals who own the corporation or share the stocks, and his primary responsibility is to them and to the company.

He has direct responsibility to his employers以及紧接着的一句,和最后in either case的那一句,都是说ceo要服从于董事会,而董事会的desires或desire就是赚更多的钱。

However, as a member of the society, the corporate executive also has individual responsibilities. For instance, he voluntarily recognizes or assumes such responsibilities to his family, his conscience, his feelings of charity, his church, his clubs, his city and  his country. He may feel impelled by these responsibilities to put part of his income into causes he regards valuable, to refuse to work for particular corporations, even to leave his job for his own interest, such as to join the social charity work. With these respects he acts as a principal, but not an agent; he spends his own money, time and energy, and not the money of his employers or the time or energy (这个or,or可以不要,没这么说的) he has contracted to devote to their purposes. On this personal ground, an executive could, or even should bear some responsibilities.

Further, the executive, in his capacity as a businessman, should take the "social responsibility of business". What does that mean? Without pure rhetoric, it means that he or she is to act in some way that is not in the interest of his employers, but the society. For example, by refraining from increasing the price of the product, the executive has a responsibility to contribute to the social objective of preventing inflation, even though the price increase would be of the best interests of the corporation. In each of these cases, the corporate executive would sacrifice(这里这个词似乎不太合适) the company's money for the general social interests, which seem to be inepitude(! Yet, the result moves into the opposite direction. It is perhaps(原来那个may perhaps重复不?) that the government will lend some economical priorities; their social image will undergo amelioration; their employees will exhibit a strong cohesion. For these reasons mentioned above, when the social interest is confronted with the interest of business, an effective and competent executive should place the weight(?你的意思是转移重心?) on the former one.

For the long-lasting development of the company, so as to the society, each corporate executive should take precedence for the public interest.
