正文
写的好失败,中途发现自己原来的提纲禁不住推敲,结果边想边写,用了将近两个小时,大家拍吧!
The speaker asserts that corporate executives should assume the only responsibility of maximizing their companies' profit within the law. While I concede that maximizing income is the sole duty for business leaders, however, the limit of acting within law should be a little broader –that is to act in accordance with the general good of the society.
To begin with, let me analysis the relationship between a company and its leader. In modern economy theory, companies are defined as economic organizations whose purpose is to pursuit profits. And in law, company can be regarded as a social person. It bestow the leader his authority and power in this organization, thus what the leader do must be in accordance with the company's will, That is to say, the leader's responsibility is to lead all the employees of the company to carry the company' will. Therefore, in the following discussion, we will focus on the function of corporation; for that determines the executives' duties.
Obviously, a company, being a economic organization, should focus its attention economic goals -maximum profit. First, the company depends on the profit to survive and thrive because it needs to pay its workers' salaries and the expense of its routine function and other cost. Without certain profit, a company cannot survive, let alone thrive. Second, by pursuiting maximum profit, the company can benefit the society. For this pursuit leads to competition between companies. As a result, they together supply more goods of good quality and low prices. This is the company's social duty. And finally, if a company gains more income, it brings more revenues for the government, and consequently benefit the society. Thus, the most essential responsibility of a corporate leader is to gain as much money as possible.
However, as we all know, a company must act within the realm of laws in order to maintain the general good of a society. For example, if a company is allowed to pursuit profit by producing opium, since it is detrimental to the stability of the society, thus the production and purchase of drugs is banned. Yet, laws usually fail to protect the interest of the society; for laws usually lag behind the development of the society and there are some aspects that any law cannot cover. Thus, the company needs to restrict its behavior on its own in such aspects. (15:56)And as the administrative of the corporation, the leader should assume this responsibility. For example, a company usually has to decide whether or not it should pursuit more profit, but such investment may bring some harm to the environment without violating laws. As a responsible company executive, he has the obligation to choose the former one; otherwise the environment will be destroyed, and eventually it harms his company.
I notice that, as some one may argue, there are higher requirements for a company and its administrative, such as prompting the social welfare, enhancing its employees’ personal development and even protecting the polluted environment. I must point out that such requirements confuse the function of companies and government and no-profit organizations. Such extra burden imposed upon corporations may greatly hamper the company’s activity and development, and even put it in the brisk of collapse.
To sum up, as the representative of a company, executives’ sole responsibility is to operate the company’s will, that is to maximize its profit, and what he has done should not violate the general good of the society. |
