Such non-mainstream inquiry play an important role in society by satisfying human needs that are not addressed by mainstream science.

正文

The speaker asserts that such non-mainstream inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits serves to satisfy human needs that can not be addressed by mainstream science, however, in my view, such research activity performs poor in its function, either in attaining its scientific goal or in fulfilling its social duty, and thus is of little value to the society.

First, let us examine its scientific goal –that is to explore the unknown. All non-mainstream inquiry will define it as a pioneer scientific activity and aims to satisfy the curiosity of human being and the desire for certainty. I concede that those so-called pioneer science shares something with our traditional science. A researcher commented on astrology -one of the most popular non-mainstream science (and I paraphrase):"They (he refers to Ancient Chinese and Greek) observed that the activity of the astronomical bodies, especially the sun, affected the output of their corn. Bases on this observation, they believed that every star and their position represents and reflects one aspects of the human activity. And this is how the astrology developed."
I should add that it is also the start of astronomy –one of the traditional sciences. This example reveals the fundamental difference between mainstream science and non-mainstream one. Astrology simply tells a correlation between the sun and the agriculture activity and extends this correlation to every condition; while astronomy tries to establish a cause-effect relationship between them by stating that the sun affects the climate and eventually exerts an influence on the agriculture activity. Another difference between them is that the result of traditional science is repeatable and objective while one can never expect what would happen by the theory of non-mainstream inquiry. For example, in the psychic experiment, no one can repeat the same result even under the identical condition. Lacking cause-effect relationship and repeatability, non-mainstream science fails to predicate the future or gives conflicting results. Therefore, it does nothing to improve our understanding of the world, let alone to guide our actions.

Another reason why numerous people embrace the non-mainstream science is to gain psychological satisfaction, which, unfortunately, it also fails to address. An advocate of astrology argues:“ The astrology may be wrong, but it is the only plausible theory to predicate the future so far available.” However, if it forecast a bright future, one will just wait for it without any effort because such success is predetermined with some paranormal forces. On the contrary, when facing a disappointing prediction, he/her may give up any positive actions since failure is inevitable. Moreover, excessive belief in non-mainstream science and the desire to defend it often leads to self-deception and illusion which greatly affect the normal life of the participants. Especially, participants in psychic research often mistake something unknown for the divine of the soul which turn out to be special optic phenomena under pecular condition. In short, adherence to the non-mainstream doctrine, one will lose the ability to think independently and the courage to make choices in the real life and develop a distorted cognition of the world.

In sum, non-mainstream inquiry cannot stand as a believable science due to lack of causal relationship and the use of logic, which determines its trivial value in the exploration of the nature. Its unscientific nature determines that non-mainstream science fails to carry out its social function as well. In final analysis, I will propose that we should admit that traditional science has limits, however, only by developing it, can science plays its vital role in the society.
