"Public figures such as actors, politicians, and athletes should expect people
to be interested in their private lives. When they seek a public role, they
should expect that they will lose at least some of their privacy."
[essay]
Few people, if asked, would say that they are not interested in others' affairs, even fewer would deny that they have especially strong desires to look into public figures' private lives, say, actors, politicians and athletes.
It is probably an eternal truth that public figures can not escape away from such disturbance. Impartially judged, it is human nature to search for things one is not familiar with. The phenomenon, sometimes called "curiosity", takes place everywhere. Quite much curiosity indeed does a lot good to we humans. For instance, the desire to uncover the nature's mystery has turned out to be numerous inventions throughout the history and has thus pushed our civilization forward. But here, I only refer to the controversial side of "curiosity". We won't disappoint ourselves if we set out to look for this side of curiosity. Just look at piles of mysterious books and detective stories in bookstores and listen to the talk-shows that focus on others' love stories or the brand of toothbrush once they have used!
However, it seems not much immoral for the grass-root people to bear such curiosity. Public figures, by the category they are defined, are separated from their public sections of life (say, daytime) between their private sections of life (say, nights and holidays). Nobody would be as naive as to believe that Mr. Bush would state his goal to his wife as he does at the president table, nor do people have full confidence in film stars' wonderful appearances in TV series and movies that really take us away. People would feel especially satisfied when they learn a well-famed celebrity is in fact a playboy, showing a sharp contrast to what he behaves in the past. In this way, wanting to know more about the public people seems to have a very decent excuse.
In response, people under thousands of eyes should be aware of the fact that their private lives, though separated from their public lives, are curiously related to the public side. They should pay much more attention to their privacy, as it shows up to be a part of their public life. In a sense, they do have lost their privacy since they have to act up in situations where there might be Paparazzi or unknown cameras.
However, wise public figures know how to make use of audience's curiosity. Actors and actresses are most proficient in this way. They all have a detailed "notebook" in their minds of how to carry out a pink-affair in the right time and right place, with a right person. Politicians, maybe more sophisticated of doing so (cause people rarely realize they are doing the same thing like the stars), are taking advantages from others' curiosity as well.In this sense, celebrities lose their privacy deliberately so as to make their public sides more attractive, and thus more successful.
In summary, it is natural that ordinary people take special interests in public figures' private lives in order to add color to their routing life. It surely does harm to the famous people. However, the clever ones them know how to make use of this never-ending intention, in sacrifice of part of their privacy. The interaction, though a little sarcastic, may have benefits to either side. The searchers find pleasure and the responders attract eyesight. Who says it is not an all-win consequence!
