a night light may keep those must on the bed, but it may also open the door to the blues, because a new study reviews[reveals] that animals exposed to light all night long, show science[signs] of clinical depression,

if you have access to electricity, you know how[no doubt] switch on a lamp, may be you[/] even watch a little tv after the sun goes down. but our bodies use cures[cues] about light[ness] and dark to regulate our  hormones and of course our sleep cycles, so what might dix[these extra photons] be doing to our health.

To find out scientists housed mice in a room where the lights were always on. After three weeks, they found that mice who lived in the  spot lights showed simtense[symptoms] of depression, more show that[so than] mice who enjoyed 8 hours of darkness at night, interestingly, mice who could escape the light by darking[ducking] into a dark too[tube], also escaped the worst of the depression, the findings were presented on October 21st at the sociaty for neuroscience meeting in Ch, and they will be published in the journal behavior brain research in December,

so flicking their[flip that] light switch at your own rests[risk], because the artificial brightness that helps keep us up, could also keep us down.

我知道小籁要奖励我了,不过多给点声望吧,嘿嘿,我在攒人品

searching the Internet can be a totally exausting(exhausting)  experience as you band[bounce] from one side[site] to another to another, sometimes [until] you can not remember what you [were] looking for in the first place, but according to scientists you see at late[at UCLA], all that virtruall[virtual] running around is actually good exercise, for your brain. perticularly if you are older, because Internet training can enhance neural function.

The scientists work[ed] with people between the age of 55 and 78, at the start of the study, all the participents did some websearching while the scientists moniter their brain activity by functional magmatic [resonance n.  共鸣, 反响, 回声 ]  imaging, the subjects who had little exposer to the Internet before the study, showed acitivity in brain regions involved in vision, language and reading,

then everyone went home to do some surfing on their own, an hour a day for a totally[ of a ] week. When the no longer naive subjects returned to the lab, their brain scans showed additional activity in regions associated with working memory and desision making, the results were presented on October 19th at the 2009 meeting of the sociaty for neuroscience in Ch[Chicago]. so for older adults a little web surfing  could keep your brain on its tose

It is one of the most vecine[vexing引起烦恼的;使人厌烦的;伤脑筋的] problems in modern science, which wine to order with the chillen SB[Chilean sea bass]. one thing for sure though you'd [ever] only order a white wine, never a red wine with fish, the flavors just clesh【clash冲突】. But now researchers have pinpointed the problem with red wine and seafood, and some reds may actually go find with fish,

japanese scientists asked study subjects to try 38 red wines and 26 whites while eating S[scallops], some of the wines contained small amounts of iron which varied by country of origin variaty and ventage[vintage制造年期, 葡萄收获期], the tasters noted which wines really did not work with scalips[scallops], and the researchers found that those wines all had high levels of iron, so they duct[doctored此处应该是“修改,改变”的意思吧] the wine with a substance of bide[that binds] iron keeping it away from the tasters  tones[tongues] and ..[ voila
interj.  那就是; 可不是; 瞧]
the bad taste became a bad memory, the study appears in the journal  of agg[/]ricultural and food chemistry

with that knowledge in hand wine lovers should be able to find reds that taste T[terrific]  with T[tilapia], so love[look] for red wines with low iron, just for the ha[halibut]

some people eat to avoid being board[bored], others to avoid doing something they'd rather not, like preparing a podcast now a report says we might eat to avoid fungy[fungi] because warm bloodedness-- a condition that requires a lot of calaries may have involved[envolved] to keep fungal actions they obey[infections at bay],

there are obvious benefits to being warm blooded like not having to see a[sit in] sun for a few hours just to get going in the morning, another less obvious plus is the affect[fact] that we turn not to take the tect by fungi, of the one and a harf millon fungal species on earth, only a few  hundred are capable of infecting mammols, compare that to a qurter of a million fungi that target plants and fifty thousands species and fed insects, so what makes these[us] mammals relatively fungus free, it seems to be our hot bodies.

scientists measured how well 4 thousand different fungi fared different temperatures, and they found that nearly all grow well up to about 86 degrees, beyond that the survivors drop by 6 percent for each extra degree, the study appears in the journal of infects[Infectious] desease. bottom line if you can not stand the fungus get back in the ki[t]chen

[you know that] Warm feeling you get When you spend your time with some one you love, how about the one that comes from rapping[wrapping] your hands around a stimming[steaming] [mug] of coffee, they might be related, that what's scientists at the University of C[Colorado] and Yale University claim in the October 24 issue of Journal science.

The researchers included[recruited] 41 undergraduate[/] volunteers, participents were handed a cup of either hod or ice coffee to hold, but being totaled the[without being told it was] part of the experiment, then they were handed a description of an imaginary person, person A with a [list of A’s ] personality traits, afterwards the undergraduate described that person, those behalf[who’d held the hot] coffee readed[rated] person A significantly warmer, from[friendlier] more generous than those who held the ice coffee,

in a second study 53 volunteers held hot or cold there parts[therapeutic pads], then they can choose get from[a gift certificate for] themselves afford[or for] a friend, those who[’d held the hot pads] were more likely to be generous and give the [gift certificate] to friends, researchers say this shows that physical and affordable warms[metaphorical warmth] are linked which means it is not a bad idea to order a hod drink on your next hod date

How many times that[has] your mother told you to turn off the lights when you leave a room, and[or to] close the fridge door while you decide what to eat. well climitologist[climatologists] are on her side, because according to a study of perceiding[in the Proceedings n.  诉讼; 会议记录; 议项] of the national academy of sciences reducing global carbet mashines[carbon emissions] should begin at home,

even if politicians  manage to pass climate change legislation, it could be years or even dacades, before those policies start to make a difference, in the meantime, scientists say, there are things we can all do to shrink our carbon foot print, if her[You’ve heard] most of than[‘em这是什么意思?官网上也是这个难道是them?] before, everything from inserlating[insulating] your home and using low flow shower hands[showerheads], to driving more efficient vehicles and car pooling to the office, but these things really work,

base in part on how [folks responded] to the energy crisis in the 70, the scientists conculated[calculated] how many americans might be willing to reform their energy wasting ways, and they found that within 10 years, we can reasonably expect to cut our national admission[emissions] by 7.4 percent,  that much carbon is  slightly larger than the total amount put out by France, if we can manage that, the whole world might say meel see[merci 谢谢你!]

If you want to lose weight, really lose it in keep it off, look around your house, how many TV sets are there, and is there an exercise bike or any other similar equipment the answers could predict the success of your weight loss request[quest] according to a report in the anal's[Annals] behaviour[Behavioral] medicine,

in the study, scientists surveyed 167 people who managed to lose 10 percent of their body weight and keep it off for 5 years, they compared them to two other groups whose dieting was not so successful and they found that the slenderized subjects in addition to having fewer high fat foods in the house, also had fewer TV sets and more exercise equipment, these people were more likely to work out more careful about calaries[calories] and less likely to sit for hours in front of the tube,

the results pretty much croberate[corroborate] common sense if you want to shed a few ponds[pounds] do not fill your cabert[cupboard] with cupcakes instead fill your living space with things that would make you more likely not less likely to actually move, things like a treatmail[treadmill n.  踏车, 单调的工作] or a stationary cycle or a key that you can use to lock the door and go out for a nice walk

When you’re done listening to this podcast, grab whatever product you use to clean. Maybe it’s something that smells really citrusy柑橘. Do a bit of cleaning. Then take a few deep breaths. Believe it or not the odds are now higher that you’ll make decisions that are both more fair and more generous than you would have without smelling the cleanser. That’s according to research published in the journal Psychological Science.
Study subjects were tested in two different rooms. One room had recently been spritzed with citrus-scented glass cleaner. The first test evaluated fairness—how much real money the participants were willing to share with an anonymous partner in another room. Participants in the clean-smelling room offered twice as much cash.
In the second test, subjects gauged how interested they were in volunteering for Habitat for Humanity and in donating money. Those in the clean-smelling room said they were significantly more interested in volunteering and almost three times more likely to donate money.
Researchers claim that clean smells thus promote moral behavior. And that schools, workplaces and stores could take advantage of the finding. So if you’re being virtuous, maybe you’re following the rules because you’re following your nose.

Emphysema and cystic fibrosis patients who need new lungs are faced with a life threatening[threatening] problem, more than 80% of donated lungs can't be used, they are inflamed and barely functional, but a new approach detailed this week in the new Journal science translational medicine, discribe[describes] a novel gene therapy that can repair these damaged lungs and make them available for transplant,

researchers first developed a system for preserving the lungs, they put the orgens[organs] in a glass chimber[chamber] and kept them functioning under[and at] human body temperature, this technique proved better than freezing,  then they inserted into the lungs a gene called I[IL-10], the gene plays a key role in inhabiting[inhibiting] the immune response, about 6 hours after ejection[injection] the cells start producing proteins, that come back[combat] the damaging information[inflammation n.  怒火; 燃烧; 发火], the presence the I may also lower the chances that recipien n.  接受者; 接受器, 容器; 受领者; 间接宾语 of the lung would reject of the transport[transplanted] organ,

after the gene therapy treated lungs showed improved blood flow and were significantly better at taking in oxygen and expelling carben dioxide, the technique could double the number of the lungs available for transplant truly making patients breathe easier

You can teach your dog to lie down. But you can’t teach him to lie, or to know when you’re lying. Because a new report shows that Spot can’t spot deception[n.  欺骗; 诡计]. The study’s in the journal Behavioural Processes.

We’ve all known pooches who run and hide when their owners shout “let’s go for a ride”—when what they really mean is “we have an appointment with the vet.” But do the dogs really know that their people are being duplicitous? To find out, Mark Petter, a student in clinical psychology at Dalhousie University in Canada, decided to fib[n.  小谎, 打, 一击 v.  撒小谎] to some Fidos. In his experiment, dogs were shown two covered containers. One held a treat. The other: nothing but disappointment. In half the trials, a helpful trainer stood behind and pointed to the container holding the treat. In the other half, a deceptive trainer pointed to the empty container. The results? The dogs approached the honest trainer a little more often than they did the deceiver. But not enough to conclude that the pups had figured out that one of the guys was pulling their leg. So dogs may be able to sniff out bombs. But they can’t pick up the smell of mendacity[n.  虚伪, 说谎癖, 谎话].

In an earthquake, the ground beneath you gives way. It’s no longer the one thing you can count on to be solid and stable. Instead, it swerves, dips and waves. And now scientists are saying that earthquakes can cause the ground to do something they didn’t expect—to bounce up and down like a trampoline.
Scientists at Japan’s National Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Prevention analyzed information from a recent quake in their country. They noticed that the ground jolted around in a way that couldn’t be explained with traditional models. They report their findings in the October 31st issue of the journal Science.
According to common models, earthquakes are expected to ripple horizontally—and the resulting up-down waves should be symmetrical. The June quake had rapidly accelerating up and down movement, with asymmetrical waves—and much higher peaks. The researchers propose【v.  计划, 建议, 打算; 打算, 求婚】 a new model of how the soil is behaving. They say that lighter soil is bouncing off the tougher crust beneath it. Understanding how this process works is important for the architects and engineers who design bridges and buildings to withstand an earthquake’s shake.
