In the popular point of view, a leader should stay stoic and hold to his principles and objectives, and therefore, any concession to shifts in popular opinions would waste his accomplishments. I think the author has been too extreme in what he alleges. We need a rational understanding of balancing a leader's principles and reacting to the shifts in popular opinions.
First of all, the leader's role is determinant to the way in which he should react to different kind of situations. A typical leader allocates resources, distribute work to group members, and encourages all members and guide them through their common goals. Earnest commitment to their principles and objectives, as is often found in traditional notions relating groups and leaders, will certainly bring cohesion to the group. We find followers of a religion with the belief in their gods, the group of pirates who fights their enemies relentlessly for treasures, and revolutionists who sacrifice themselves bravely for the great causes. The leaders planted the commitment into their members, which continues to stimulate their royalty towards the group. As we can see, the commitment at first gives us the belief that it can bring cohesion to a group, which will undoubtedly turn into a leader's success.
Although commitment results into some expectible good factors to the group, it could sometimes deflect the group's efforts from its supposed goals. It is like a huge ship which has enormous impetus but turns clumsily. This is especially true in those rapidly changing sectors, such as IT. A telecommunications company which is renowned in its cable network business will be forced to shift their priority to the wireless, as the wireless is destinedly the future trend. A country that is closed will also consider opening up to the world and struggle for more opportunities in global competition. Commitment to their original principles and objectives contradict to the trend of the times, and has to be dropped.
Second, the changing of objective of commitment will be bitter and troublesome and sometimes cause the leader to be lost, they actually demand the wit of observing the situation and working out an optimal solution. Suppose a group of computer genius who developed numerous viruses and destroyed masses of data. The leader of the group, if he has realized the people's anger with the viruses, will certainly turn his group into security experts who work against viruses - before the police investigate their crimes, and regain reputation. Politicians are another example of who always "sails with the winds" of the shifts of popular opinions to distribute their political opinions. To keep his position, the leader of a country is also carefully observing and reacting to the popular opinions. As we see, the wit of treating others' opinions is also another factor that contributes the success of some other kinds of leaders.
Third, instead of being mutually exclusive, commitment to particular principles and objectives are more often combined with being influenced by popular opinion shifts. In today's hyper-competitive world, different companies maintain their profit by keeping to their own edges and unique points, while reacting quickly to the demands of their customers. In addition, reacting to changes may also be a kind of principle for businesses like fashion and city infrastructure construction, which is highly dependent on public opinions. Any leader in charge of these will be required to strike a balance between commiting to their own principles and reacting quickly to popular opinions.
In sum, being quickly influenced by shifts in popular opinion is not to be simply equalled to the failure of a leader. It is also unsuitable to contrast such influence against the insist on certain principles and objectives. A leader does not shut communication to the outside by commiting to his principles, but rather needs to find ways to success using all means. Therefore, a balance is required between them if a leader is to be effective.

比如IT业。

thanks in advance
