处女作文贴 Argument3
TOPIC: ARGUMENT3 - The following appeared in a newspaper article about law firms in the city of Megalopolis.
"In Megalopolis, the number of law school graduates who went to work for large, corporate firms declined by 15 percent over the last three years, whereas an increasing number of graduates took jobs at small, general practice firms. Even though large firms usually offer much higher salaries, law school graduates are choosing to work for the smaller firms most likely because they experience greater job satisfaction at smaller firms. In a survey of first-year students at a leading law school, most agreed with the statement that earning a high salary was less important to them than job satisfaction. This finding suggests that the large, corporate firms of Megalopolis will need to offer graduates more benefits and incentives and reduce the number of hours they must work."
In this memo, the author recomends the large law firm in Megalopolis offer graduates more benefits to increase the number in these big firms. To support his recommendation the author states that graduates in the large, corporate firms declined by 15 percent, wheres an increasing number in small, general practice firms. The author also cites a survey of first-year students agreed high salary was less important to them than job satisfaction. However, I find the argument dpecious in several respects.
Firstly, the argument relies on the 15 precent decline of law scool graduates went to work for large, corporate firms. Yet no evidence shows that graduates do not willing to work in those large, corporate firm just because the decline. Maybe it was because that large, corporate firms have more severe requirements for graduates to get into, or maybe due to the financial ciris those large firms have reduced their recruitment plan. Besides, the memo provies no convicing evidence to support this statistics.
Secondly, the author show no evidence that graduates are chososing to work for the smaller firms just because they ecperiece greater job satisfaction in smaller firms. Since satisfaction do not mean they will give up their chance to earn much money. And the survey of first-year students at a leading law school is not realible. The idea of first-year students do not show they will remain their idea after four years.Perhaps they were too young to consider other factors like they have to rasing their future family by earning much money or maybe they will find themselves prefer large, corporate firms beacuse they are mouch more stable.Meanwhile, even if this survey is realible, one leading law school survey cannot represent other law schools students, and espically Megalopolis students.
Thirdly, even if the suggestions are taken, I do not believe more grduates will go to work for large, corporate firms. I do not agree reducing working hour and more benefits or incentives will made more grauduates to come. Now, more young people want to get into higher class by much working hours. Less working hours maybe made them feel they will lag behind. Perhaps they feel addtional working hour can earn much moeny which is more important to them. Moreover, every person must made their decicion very carefully, because it is related to their future development. Only this benfits cannot show more graudates will go to work for this large, corporate frim.
In conclusion, the recommendation for suggests those large, coroate firms of Megalopolis will need to offer graduate more benfits and incentives and reduce the number of hours they work will make more graudates go to work for them. The author must provide detailed evidence showing that graudates do not willing go work for the large firm. Moreover, he should show conving evidence to show students will give up to choose small firm just because they much are about the job satisfaction after they graduated from school.I would also need a detailed to show graudates will change their idea just beacause more benefits and incentives or reduce the number hours they must work. |
