TOPIC: ISSUE130 - "How children are socialized today determines the destiny of society. Unfortunately, we have not yet learned how to raise children who can help bring about a better society."

The speaker's claim is two-folded, including one perspective that the key determinant for the destiny of a society is the extent children are socialized, and another view point that the method of teaching children to improve our society is not yet grasped by people. In my perspective, however, these two sides of the author's claim are insufficiently supported.

Socialization, broadly defined as the process by which people, especially children, acquire language and get to conform to the rules in a specific setting, plays a vital role in the period of children growth. The most common form of socialization is school education, in which there are wise teachers imparting knowledge and basic communication skills and so forth. In school, activities participated by a lot of peer classmates enhance children's abilities to negotiate, understand others, judge certain ideas and take care of their behaviors in order to be welcomed by his or her classmates. These abilities will be of extreme significance when they enter into the society. In contrast, another type of being socialized is occuring at home. They will be influenced by their parents' behaviors, emotions and perspectives. Consequently, an imitation will be made by them toward what their parents do and they will get the knowledge of what a daughter, son, mother or father should do to contribute to a better family. In one word, socialization, happening since a child was born, determines many aspects of a child which would benefit the child a lot.

However, even if an essential role socialization is played on children, and even though the future of the society hinges on the generation of children, the destiny of the society does not mainly rely on the extent to which children are socialized. In another word, socialization might be a factor but not the most significant one. For instance, the president at my university once said and I paraphrase: "If you find yourself not good at communicating, or expressing your ideas, but having an excellance at doing experiments and getting the right results that almost everyone around you takes it as true, and in fact it is true, then put yourself on the things you are interested in. One day, you will make a possible invention, or achieve something helpful for the human kind", this illustrates that a person, who might be insufficiently socialized in things like making himself understood by many people for what he or she has done, would aslo possibly make contributions to the society or to the world, and even change the destiny of the society. Thomas Edison, one of the greatest inventors in 19th century, achieved those great goals such as the well-known filament lamp because of his strong will and persistence to overcome various difficulties.

In addition, as for whether we are able to bring up our children to make a better society, from my personal perspective, we have grasped an efficient and effective method. A “better society” means high quality owned by the citizens, a variety of view points for a certain thing accepted and more rights to do what people want to without hurting others of course. Firstly, nowadays, it is very often that such a situation happens as giving a seat the olders on a bus, which refects that people are concerned with the difficulties others encounter and may lend a hand to help them. Secondly, the government will encourage people to express their own thoughts about a specific event, such as the rationality of a proposal legislation and will consider these different voices when making a final decision. However, in the past, this could not happen. Finally, people have the right to choose what type of work to do, which company they work in and who they work with. When the work is not satisfactory, they could make a change; when content make a continuation. Therefore, the author’s second claim flies in the face of empirical evidence.

In sum, when considering whether the destiny of a society depends on the generation of children, we should emphasize more on children’s personal qualities and less on their socialization. And the current method of educating our children is effective from the aspects discussed above and is not in a state as the author claims. In the final analysis, I fundamentally disagree with both the two aspects of the author’s dual claim.
