TOPIC: ARGUMENT91 - The following appeared in an article in Supplements Today.

"Dieticians have long known that professional athletes who eat a lot of nuts have higher levels of endurance than those who do not. Researchers have recently discovered that the particular combination of vitamin N and fiber found in some nuts provides a boost for those who participate in strenuous physical activities daily. Both vitamin N and fiber supplements are easily synthesized and widely available. As a result, all those who participate in athletic activities will be able to increase their endurance and win more games by taking vitamin N along with a fiber supplement."

The author concludes that athletes can win more games by taking vitamin N along with a fiber supplement. To support his own claim he cites a research which discovered that the combination of vitamin N and fiber found in some nuts generates a boost for those who engage in strenuous physical activities. And he points out the professional athletes who eat a lot of nuts have higher levels of endurance. Careful scrutiny of the facts, however, reveals little credible support for the conclusion he carries out.

First of all, the author infers his conclusion in light of that the combination of vitamin N and fiber can supply a boost for people who engage in strenuous physical activities daily. However, he does not provide adequate evidences to support his own claim. There is no science evidence to explain that the vitamin N and fiber in nuts can truly impel similar improvement when athletes participate in competitions. And he does not research whether vitamin N and fiber in other objects rather than in nuts can still be effective. It is entirely possible only in nuts, when these two components are combined and synthesized with other elements, they can provide a boost . Otherwise, perhaps it is other components which are not noticed in nuts take effect. Without illustrating the difference between physical activities and competitions and explaining these two possible factors, the conclusion is not unpersuasive.

Secondly, the author carries out the conclusion by relying on the high endurance of those professional athletes who eat many nuts. It is entirely possible that this is innate ability or the result of more hardly excises. If these are cases, the higher endurance is not the consequence of vitamin N and a fiber. Without providing these information of the investigated athletes, the author cannot affirm the function of vitamin N and a fiber.

Thirdly, even if the vitamin N and a fiber have effects on endurance, it cannot be guaranteed that athletes can win the games by taking vitamin N and a fiber. Wining a game is influenced by variety of factors like the competing condition of the athletes. And even some games do not require endurance. Short-distance running is a good illustration. Because of the short distance, like 50m, the endurance is not so important, what is crucial is the boost and the speed. As a consequence, without identifying the program, carrying out this conclusion is too hurried.

In sum, the conclusion is specious. To strengthen his claim, the author should further research whether there are other
elements that function to provide a boost for people's physical activities, and rule out the possibility that the athletes who have higher endurance is the result of higher talents and excising harder. In addition, other factors which can decide the athlete's wining for a game, like the condition of athletes when rival and the requirement of the endurance in the programs should be considered.
