TOPIC: ISSUE17 - "There are two types of laws: just and unjust. Every individual in a society has a responsibility to obey just laws and, even more importantly, to disobey and resist unjust laws."

From the old city-states of Greek to Supreme Court nowadays, it has been over two thousand years since the concept of law was put forward and it is now becoming a important part in our daily life. Admittedly, I agree with the author’s contention that law can be divided into just ones and unjust ones and people should obey the just ones and resist the opposite ones. However, since the complex definition of just, one should take into careful consideration before accepting the contention.

To begin with, whether the law is just or unjust is an intricate issue and different people may have different opinion about law due to their different value system. Different value system then leads people’s diverse understanding and definition of just, which can not explain in a word or two. Besides, so complex and changing is this society that it is difficult to judge one’s behavior only with just or unjust. As a result it becomes almost impossible for our legislator to write absolute just law. Euthanasia, for instance, is one of these issue which cause great query and discussion. Some people argue that euthanasia is unjust and the government should legislate against it because it deprives the life right of people and it violate their value system while others think it is just and they believe people have right to do so. In a word, due to people’s different value system and definition of just, it become extremely hard for the legislator to make a absolute just law.

What’s more, the main function of some law, especially some business law is to protect the individual or group from losing their interest and to strike a balance among competing interests. These law cannot judge by just or unjust, but the interest among it. After all, it is the interest that the merchant really go after and they will estimate a law with personal interest. Take the trade protectionism policy and law for example. Some local merchants and people support it because it protect the local factory from the influence of other place and the local economic as well while other people may argue that it damage the interest of exotic merchant and the whole trade flows so
in their opinion it is unjust. As far as the business law is concerned, it can not just distinguish form just and unjust and people will react with obedience or resistance due to their different interest.

However, there is still some law which people can easily judge it with just or unjust and people should hold an unwavering mind to obey these just laws and resist these ones. One of these law is the ones which relate to our human being, our world, the generation and so forth, such as some laws written to environment protection, or some law relate to better medical system. These laws will surely be viewed as just by everyone and people who hope for a better society should obey and support it without doubt. On the other hand, some kind of law clearly goes against with moral, ethic and spirit of human beings and, we must audaciously defy this law even it is made by the government. The law of racial separation, for instance, is one of these law which violate the moral and spirit of human beings. The law greatly damaged the fundamental right of black man and should be resisted even it is written by the government. With the hard endeavor of generation of people the government finally abolished this law. In general, as one citizen in the society, we have our obligation to obey the just law and resist the opposite to contribute a better society.

In conclusion, we have to admit the fact that not all the law can be distinguish with just and unjust in the complex and changing world and what more important is that we have the obligation to support the just law and resist the unjust one which we can discern it obviously.
