"Fifteen years ago, Omega University implemented a new procedure that encouraged students to evaluate the teaching effectiveness of all their professors. Since that time, Omega professors have begun to assign higher grades in their classes, and overall student grade averages at Omega have risen by thirty percent. Potential employers apparently believe the grades at Omega are inflated; this would explain why Omega graduates have not been as successful at getting jobs as have graduates from nearby Alpha University. To enable its graduates to secure better jobs, Omega University should now terminate student evaluation of professors."

Depending on the hypothesis that the grades of students was inflated because of the procedure of students evaluation to their teachers, and then synthesizing with another hypothesis that the graduates of Omega University failed in getting jobs and a important factor that the grades of graduates is what employers care about mostly, the author accordingly suggests that the Omega University should stop students evaluation for their professor in order to enable it graduates to secure better jobs. Careful scrutiny of the process of reasoning, however, reveals that it leads little credible support to the author’s recommendation, as discuss below.

Firstly, the author failed to establish the causal relationship between the students’ evaluation about teaching effectiveness to their professors and the high grades of these students. The argument is unacceptable unless the author put out more reasonable evidence to support the connection between the two events. Perhaps the thirty percents’ risen of grades of these students are due to their own endeavor in these fifteen years. Or perhaps the inflation of grades of students in Omega University is the result of some other measure in the university, such as awards to the teachers which give students high grades. In a word, without ruling out these possibilities about the main reason of students’ high grades, the author cannot rely on the two facts to establish a causal relationship and then draw the conclusion that the Omega University should stop the evaluation.

Secondly, the author unfairly assumes that the potential employers think the graduates at Omega are inflated and the graduates failed in finding jobs because of it. However, the author provides no evidence to support this assumption. Lacking evidence it is entirely possible that it is the high demand to their sages and working environment which leads to the failure of most graduates of Omega. Or perhaps the graduates of Omega University is in a time which the economic and market in the society is in a depression. Any of these possibilities, if true, will cast considerable doubt to the author recommendation.

Thirdly, even if the employers concern about the grades of graduates and don’t want to see the inflations of grade in finding the employees, the author further assumption that the graduates’ grades is the main direction for the companies to get employees. Common sense tells us, in a working interview, what a employer cares about mostly is their working experience, working ability, leadership and so forth. The grades of graduates are just viewed as a reference of person’s ability, but not a decisive factor. So as the university, it is better and useful for the graduate to organize more activities about how to improve the working experience, ability, cooperation with others, which will lead the students in a dominant position in getting jobs. Only terminating the evaluation for the teachers cannot offer great help to the graduates to find a ideal job.

In conclusion, the author is unconvincing as it stands. To bolster it the author must provide better evidence to show the causal relationship between evaluation to teachers and the high grades. To better assess the argument one would also need to know whether the graduates of Omega University is unpopular with these potential employers and what is the employers really care about in the employment.
