ARGUMENT97 - The following appeared in a memo from the manager of television station KICK.
"A nationwide survey reveals that a sizeable majority of men would like to see additional sports programs on television. After television station WACK increased its sports broadcasts, its share of the television audience in its viewing area almost doubled. To gain a larger audience share in our area, and thus increase company profits, KICK should also revise its broadcast schedule to include more sports coverage."
In the memo the manager of television station KICK concluded that they should add more sports converge to its new broadcast list in order to obtain a larger audience share in their area, and therefore pursuing more profit. To support this recommendation, the manager cites a nationwide survey which reveals that most of men tend to watch additional sports programs on TV; and WACK, a TV station, doubled its share of the audience after increasing its sports broadcast. However the argument suffers from several logical problems, and is therefore unpersuasive.
To begin with, the manager’s argument depends on the assumption that more people in the area of WACK TV station would like to watch its programs simply after it increases its sports broadcast. It is equally likely that other factors are instead responsible for the fact that more people are willing to watch TV programs. Perhaps, another TV shopping program actually does help to the share. Without ruling out this and other alternative explanations the manager cannot convince me that augmenting sports programs will result in boosting the share of audience in its area.
Secondly, even if the addition of sports broadcast is likely to increase the share, it’s nevertheless unfair to infer that other TV stations will also gain its share by augmenting their sports programs. Perhaps men in other areas have not much time on TV, and thus the station could not aggrandize the share. Since the manager fails to address this possibility, the claim that he would also boost the company profits by adding sports broadcast is completely unwarranted.
Thirdly, even assuming that other stations also obtain more audience in term of increasing sports channels, the result of nationwide may not apply to in the manager’s area. It’s entirely possible that KICK TV station have had enough sports broadcast; for that matter, more sports programs may add extra burden to the company, and therefore the station may not benefit from the schedule.
Finally, the manager unfairly assumes that the larger the share is, the more profits they will acquire. Yet the manager provides no evidence that they would be sure to increase profits if they obtain more shares by increasing sports broadcast, Perhaps people who watch TV in the area mainly are women and children. If so, increasing sports broadcast may not attracts more chance of advertising, and therefore may not improve profits.
In sum, the manager’s recommendation is unconvincing as it stands. To bolster it, the manager must provide evidence that the increase of the share of audience is consequence to the addition of sports broadcast not by other reasons and some other TV stations also gain the market share by doing so. To better assess the accuracy of the manager’ recommendation, I also need to know that the nationwide survey would apply to the area of KICK TV station, besides the increase of the market share would bring more profits to their company.
