TOPIC: ISSUE130 - "How children are socialized today determines the destiny of society. Unfortunately, we have not yet learned how to raise children who can help bring about a better society."
It is undoubted that the future destiny of society is determined by what children will be. But according to the speaker's dual claim, our society's destiny is only determined by how children are socialized. I maintain that claim is unsound. Society is a large group which needs all kinds of children to make it better not just the socialized kind.
Admittedly, socialization is something that children should get. They still live in the society and they need to know how to communicate with other people, how to make others accept them. If a person lives without any socialization, his/her live must be dull and painful.
However, our society is a complicated group that there are so many issues for us to solve. We need doctors to cure us, singers to make us happy, scientists to discover the secrets of our world. So children should be diverse and not only be just socialized. And that is not the one that determines the destiny of society. If the speaker is right, all we need to do is make our children be socialized and regardless of whatever else, then we can imagine what our society would be. Children may live socially, but our society may be full of cheating, disloyalty and so on. They may sacrifice a lot of great spirit to accomplish one goal--socialization. Besides history tell us that what pushes our society ahead is not socialization but some other merits inside humans. Take Thomas Edison as an example, after nearly 1000 tries, he finally found out the material to make the bulb. That makes our world lightful in every night and makes our society changed a lot. What is needed for him is persistence not socialization. So when we come to the question that what determines the destiny of society, we cannot only put socialization on the list.
Coming to the second claim that speakers hold, I have to say that our society is becoming better anyway. To speaker, his definition of a better society is a society with more socialized people. Nevertheless, a better society is far beyond that. If we define a better society as one with more tolerated, more acceptable to different ideas, more civilized people, then our society is getting better than ever. Recently, people are more willing to accept other people and ideas that we did not like to accept before. For instance, homosexuals were considered ones with great disease in the past. People felt disgusted and even hated them. But today, more people are getting to take it as a normal choice for people. That makes our society more harmony in some way and result to a better society.
In sum, how children are socialized is one part to get our society better. Besides that there are so many aspects to determine what is there for our society. And we cannot say we have not learned how to raise children who can bring about a better society because a better society is not the definition of socialization. Our society do developed and is getting better with more tolerance and development of science. Finally I disagree with both parts of this dual claim. |
