Argument147: Although the sales of Whirlwind video games have declined over the past two years, a recent survey of video-game players suggests that this sales trend is about to be reversed. The survey asked video-game players what features they thought were most important in a video game. According to the survey, players prefer games that provide lifelike graphics, which require the most up-to-date computers. Whirlwind has just introduced several such games with an extensive advertising campaign directed at the people 10 or 25 years old, the group most likely to play video games. It follows then, that the sales of Whirlwind video games are likely to increase dramatically in the next few months.

In this editorial the argument the editor claims that the sales of Whirlwind video games will increasing rapidly in the next few months. To support this claim the editor cites the following facts. The editor points out evidence that a recent survey which suggests that the sales is going to be reversed. In addition, he indicates that players incline to games provide lifelike graphics. Furthermore, he cites the fact of an advertising campaign which conducted by Whirlwind in support of this argument. At first glance, the editor’s argument appears to be somewhat impelling, but further reflection reveals that it omits some substantial concerns that should be provided to validate the argument. In short, this argument suffers from several logical flaws.

Firstly, a critical problem is that the editorial neglects to indicate how recently the survey was actually conducted. When samples are used to make general claims about the respondents, the samples should be close enough in time to the generalization. It is possible that the increasing trend maintains only a short time over the last few months. Or perhaps, the trend would still decline in future. In addition, how many players have participated in this survey? The respondents must be statistically significant in number and representative. Is the number of players sufficient and randomly. So this evidence is too vague to be meaningful.

Secondly, even if the survey is properly, no evidence shows that the trend about video sales will increase result from the players’ preference of video with lifelike graphics. It is entirely possible that the players prefer games like to download from internet rather than buy video games. Or perhaps, as it mention in the argument that the game require most up- to-date computer which may result in decline in sales about video games, because commonsense informs us such computers are always expensive, therefore players may incline to go internet cafes to play games, this will eventually helpless to increase the sales. Furthermore, no evidence indicates that the advertising campaign directed at people 10 to 25 years old is successful. It might make counterproductive effect in this campaign.

Finally, the editor claims that Whirlwind Company likely to raise in the next few months is unwarranted. The assumption is unfounded because things rarely remain the same over extended period of time. As we know that one kind video game is popular today is not indicate that will maintains the trend. Then, the argument is unreliable without such possibly.

Sum up, the editor claims that Whirlwind company’s sales on video games are likely to increase is unconvincing. To make its claim more convincing, the editor should provide a well-reasoned survey and indicate that many players prefer to buy video-game to enjoy games and also point out that the campaign is excessively successful. Therefore, it would be more thorough and logically acceptable.
