TOPIC: ISSUE206 - "People are too quick to take action; instead they should stop to think of the possible consequences of what they might do."

Since the 17th century, efficiency and profit have become more and more dominated in our society. In order to adapt this change and to survive from the fierce competition, people have to enhance their abilities and efficiency as well. Therefore, more quick action without a twice thinking is a familiar phenomenon around us. However, as I concern, no matter how less time is left for you, a twice thinking is still a significant step before you moving forward.
Date back to the 17th century, the first Industry Revolution; the society welcomed an era of prosperity and technology advance. More and more people join the team to operate their own factory, business and, moreover, the colony invasion. During that time, what people most concerned was how to make as much money as possible in a relatively short time. Hence, the ones who take the first step, the ones who react faster than others, means all these people often acquire greater advantage and more profit. And such trend was gradually copied by more and more people. Admittedly, the boom of industry revolution did bring great prosperity to the society. However we also did witness lots of problems, such as the fatal environment and energy issues, which were overlooked during the 17th century. Just because some people pursuing the most profit without further consideration, that lead environmental problems to slightly accumulate. And finally, those people have to pay much more back for fixing the problems they planted years before. In 2002, the Bush government refuse to sign up on the Tokyo CO2 protocol, for afraid this protocol may do harm to US motor industries. Unfortunately, this action some or less accelerates the Global Warming. Since then, the global temperature has increased at least 3 degree centigrade. The Atlantic icebergs are declining rapidly, many countries face the threat of being drowned by the increased sea level. Because of an action without more consideration, people in the world have to face the great challenge for survival. There are many similar examples show us the fatal results that too quick action without twice thinking may brings. Therefore, in short, some time a stop to think the consequences may reduce the lost we may have in the future.
On the other hand, a further consideration instead of quick action possibly not reduces the profit but help to reach the final victory. On the war field, fast reaction usually means advantages, such as the Thunder Action which German army applied in the World War II. However the fast action does not always bring the victory. Back to the WW II, on the North Africa field, the famous Desert Fox, Erwin Rommel did successfully apply the Thunder Action strategy. But at last, the French and British army won the North Africa battle because they reconsider the situation and wait until all the back-up arrived. Finally, they launched the attack step by step, and gradually took back the fields. Because of more consideration, the North Africa battle was end up with the victory of Britain and France. Not only on the battle field of bullets, but also on the field of economy, consideration before action may bring back more profit.
Nowadays, when we look back to the depressions, similarly, we may find that all the crisis share something in common, that is the arbitrary investigation without more consideration. However, we can also find that, during these depressions, there were some winners stood out, and in my mind, the President Roosevelt is the most successful one. During the 1930s. The US faced great challenge of economic crises. Most of the American people were willing to get rid of the burden of the depression. But surprisingly, President Roosevelt did not choose to help the economic industry, otherwise he paid most attention to the fundamental facilities construction. Looking back to this policy, it turned to be a wise and flexible choice. Because of the attention to the basic facilities foundation, the employ problem was settled, and gradually, the whole economy was turning into a better situation. All these successes should be contributed to Roosevelt’s further consideration. Shortly, sometimes, a further consideration may bring greater benefit to us.
Granted that, some time if we spend too much time on planning and imagining the consequence, the chances may flip away through our fingers. Therefore, a consideration should be taken, as while we must react quickly. A balance between the quick action and further consideration is necessary.
On the whole, no matter how hard you are being pushed in front of the time, do spend some time to consider what may happen in the future, plan what steps you may take in the future.
感觉例子举得不是非常恰当,望大家多给给意见!~
TOPIC: ARGUMENT222 - The following article appeared in a recent issue of a college newspaper.
"Among all students who graduated from Hooper University over the past five years, more physical science majors than social science majors found permanent jobs within a year of graduation. In a survey of recent Hooper University graduates, most physical science majors said they believed that the prestige of Hooper University's physical science programs helped them significantly in finding a job. In contrast, social science majors who found permanent employment attributed their success to their own personal initiative. Therefore, to ensure that social science majors find permanent jobs, Hooper University should offer additional social science courses and hire several new faculty members who already have national reputations in the social sciences."

The author claims that the reason why more physical science majors found permanent jobs than social science majors is the prestige of Hooper University's physical science programs. Therefore, the author suggests that the Hooper University should hire famous professors in social science in order to help the social science student to find jobs. After more consideration about the reasons and claim, I find some defects of this suggestion.
At first, different majors cultivate different kind of people, and different field have distinguished standard for employees. For physical science, many courses are intended to help students to think questions more logically and unconstrained. Hence, maybe great labs could offer students chances to practice their logical thinking and ability. Or great professors could offer some useful suggestion for students to research problems from another way. On the other hand, for social science students, perhaps what important to them is more observation and communication with different people. This means they should spend more time outside the classroom and campus. Thus, seems famous professors and more courses means little to the social science students. Meanwhile, as the author says, those social science students who find jobs are those with great personal initiative, which cannot be cultivated by some people or courses but the students themselves. Shortly, those method help the physical science students to find jobs should not directly apply to social science students.
Moreover, the author merely show us the past five years situation, I think this period of time is less convincible. It is possible during the past 5 years; there are special needs for physical science students, which leads to the high employ rate. Otherwise, unfortunately, the society doesn’t require many social science students, which leads only the outstanding ones find the permanent jobs. As a conclusion, without providing more information about the employ rate 5 years before, the survey is not robust enough.
Similarly, the author just shows us the employ situation within a year of the graduation, but how about the second and third year? As we know, the social science requires students to accumulate more social experience than other majors. Therefore, many students may choose to find temporary jobs or internships, perhaps, switching them frequently in order to accumulate different experience and observe distinguished kinds of people, this may help them better apply what they learned in school and help them to better develop themselves. Thus, within a year of the graduation, the social science students may not will to find permanent jobs. So, without the information of employment rate about more years after graduation, I cannot conclude that the social science students are not competitive.
On the whole, the reasons the author provides seem persuasive. However, after more consideration, we may find there are still lots of confusion leave behind. Therefore, without more information and reasons, I cannot easily share the conclusion with the author.
