TOPIC: ISSUE163 - "Most people live, whether physically or morally, in a very restricted circle. They make use of a very limited portion of the resources available to them until they face a great problem or crisis."
The speaker claims that most people live, whether physically or morally, in restricted circle and use very limited portion of the resources available, but their facing a great problem or crisis will help get rid of the circle. I generally agree with the speaker's claim and my detailed considerations are presented below.
Firstly, most people live normally, whether physically or morally, in a very restricted circle. Though there are many resources that are available to them, they only know to make use of a very limited portion of them. Though people can meet a considerable number of people in their daily life, they may be more easily influenced by familiar people or friends of his own that they may draw the same conclusion as what these people does. They may encounter a great number of things of various kinds, but they always tend to deal with them based on the existing methods without considering using other available resources. People are also confined by their custom and culture which have great influences on their belief or attitudes on particular things. Based on these considerations, it is understandable that they are easily restricted in this small group both physically and morally.
Secondly, the embrace with a great problem or crisis can serve to help people get rid of these restrictions. When a great problem or crisis, they may find it too hard to deal with by using the familiar existing methods that they have to break the restricted circle to seek out other resources available to them which are effective in solving these problems. For instance, before the outbreak of the recent economy crisis, western people think about their economic problems in the thorough capital respects, however, since the economy condition is so urgent that they now seek all resources available in coping with it. The popularity of Carl Max's book " Capital " in the western world can serve as a proof for the outbreak of the restricted circle.
Some detractors may argue that the development of modern technology has successfully solved the restricting condition. Admittedly, with the invention of Internet, we can now get access to different kinds of ideas and opinions from people of various status or perspectives all around the world. These of course help people open their eyes to look at things more considerately. However, since there are so many resources available now, people may face the problem of distinguishing the useful information and the harmful resources that may cause misleading restrictions. Besides, the virtual nature of the Internet itself is a restriction on its user. So there is still a long way to go before we can say that we suffer no moral or physical restrictions any more.
To sum up, though modern technology especially the Internet does serve to allay the restricting condition, most people now are still tripped in a very restricted circle. Facing particularly great problem or crisis, people will consider the outbreak of the circle by giving considerations to other resources that may be effective in solving these problems.
