TOPIC: ARGUMENT72 - In measuring electrical activity in different parts of the brain, researchers found that people who describe themselves as generally happy have more activity in the left prefrontal lobe of their brains than do other people. Therefore, a medication for stimulating the left prefrontal lobe of the brain would be an effective treatment for clinical depression.
WORDS: 440 TIME: 00:30:00 DATE: 2009/9/14 9:52:12
The author suggests that stimulating the left prefrontal lobe of the brain will be an effective treatment for clinical depression. To support his conclusion, the author provides a research about the happy people whose left prefrontal lobe is more active than others. However, the suggestion sounds reasonable and logical, I find there are several defects about the author's proof.
First of all, there is much confusion about the research itself. Such as whether the sampling resource is reliable? Perhaps the research picks some special people who often have to make use of their left brain, thus the left brain is more active. Moreover, the people who take in the research claims they are generally happy, but are this definitely true? It has chances that those people may stay in some embarrassing situation which makes them unhappy at all, but they are not willing to tell the truth. And then even the research shows that people who join in the test, who claim they are happy have more activity than others, however the research doesn't provide any scientific evidence about the result of the research. It may be a coincident that the research gets the result. Therefore, without more evidence and research about the relation between the activity in left brain and the happiness, I cannot promptly share the conclusion with the author.
Moreover, the author suggests stimulating the left prefrontal lobe in order to heal the clinical depression. The purpose of the author is good but without more information and proof about the effectiveness and safety about the stimulating method, it may bring fatal result to some patients. As we all know that human brain is the most complex part of the human body. It has been a long time for thousands of scientists devoting their time for the brain research. Unfortunately, the brain is still remaining a mystery thing to us. Therefore, without more evidence about the safety of the stimulating method, I have no ideas about the result the stimulating method may bring to the human. As well, as the brain is still mysterious, it may have chances that the more activity does not directly caused by the happiness, thus the stimulating may does not help to sooth the depression. In sum, without more proof, more research, more theory supported, I cannot suggest to stimulate the brain for it has great risk for hurting our brains.
On the whole, because the brain is amazing and mysterious, without more information, more evidence, more experiment and more theory provided, it should not promptly suggest the stimulating method for the patients, for the sake of high risk of hurting our brains.
感觉这个argue可以驳斥的地方主要就两个,不知到各位还有没其他可以建议!~thx!!~ |
