TOPIC: ISSUE51 - "Education will be truly effective only when it is specifically designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student."
WORDS: 634 TIME: 00:45:00 DATE: 2009-9-15 15:46:31
In this soceity that quite values individuality and uniqueness, increasing number of people believe that education should be specifically designed to meet the individual needs and interests. It is true that this kind of education can help student develop in their most talented field and find their own positions in society, but this kind of education also contains several disadvantages that make it difficult to realize at present.
Education meets students from vastly different backgrounds with various interest, habits and abilities, a fact that gives increasing urgency to the need to design a specific education in accordance to personal conditions. Every student has his or her strong points and weak points, no one would expect a student with as much music talent as Mozart to study complicated mathematics knowledge and few would like to see a student with great gift for science struggling in the Shakespere's literature. Education specifically designed can help students develop at the field which they are good at, only in this way, can students give full rein to their abilities and make contribution to the society. If Mozart was forced to study mathematics at his early age, he may not have time to develop his music talent, and the final result would be a loss of a great musician.
It is important for education at any level to teach students all kinds of knowledge, and people may satisfy with the siuation where lots of students sit in a large classroom, listening to what their teacher says in the front. However, stuffing students' heads full of knowledge is far from being a truly effective education. Genuine education, as Socrates said, should not be inserting information into a person, but rather, eliciting what is in the mind. Students think differently and they should be given a kind of education that can extract different passion, emotions and desires from them, helping them find their individuality and take their own position in the adult world. Traditional eduction treats every student as the same individual, but education which is specifically designed can take students' different emotions and needs into consideration, thus helping students find their own way to success.
However, it should be realized that this kind of education is not perfect. First and foremost, the cost of establishing such kind of education can be very large. There must be sufficient teachers to teach each student and these teachers must have the strong ability to find the individual needs and interests of each student. Special curriculums should be set for every student, each particular mind should be cared for and every interest of student must be paid attention to. The cost, both tangible and intangible, may beyond the ability of present education system. Another potential disadvantage of this specific education lies in that, when each student is put in an education that is particularly designed for him or her, the student may only live in his or her own world and do not realize that there are many students holding different opinions, values and desires living in the same world. They may grow up to be an ego -- centered person who cares little about what other people think and behave. Traditional education gives students opportunities to communicate and cooperate with different students and from this students gradually learn the importance of tolerance and the way to get along with other people. However, the specifically designed education fails to do that.
In conclusion, designing education according to the particular conditions of students can better meet the individual needs and interests of student and help them find their own way to grow up to be a qualified and competent adult. However, the large cost and the potential harm of this kind of education should be taken into consideration when people are trying to reform the education. |
