All nations should help support the development of a global university designed to engage students in the process of solving the world's most persistent social problems.
The suggestion of all nations help support the development of a global university to cultivate students in order to solve the world's most persistent social problems seems quite terrific to all appearances. However, after a second thought, I find the action of developing a global university is quite unrealistic in some respects and the result caused may aggravate the existing problems or even lead to new thorny problems to rise.
First, how do the global university decides the percentage of each country's students? Should it be divided by the contribution to the building of the university or simply by each country's population? The former will cause cultural aggression, for the students from less developed countries may be attracted by the advanced techniques such as digital products and may be eager to get involved into the majority, thus they are not quite being themselves and the potential intent of offering new perspective of solving persistent problems through combining diverse cultures becomes meaningless. One compelling example to support this point is that nowadays, many Chinese young people take Christmas Day and Saint Valentine's Day far above their traditional festivals such as Spring Festival and Mid-autumn day. They prefer sending roses to lovers than traditional red beans although they own the same meaning. By only indirect contacting with more powerful western culture can people in less development countries change so much, let alone allow the immature group to live within it. The final result is very likely to contradict its origional purpose. The latter, though seems to be equal for the weak countries, is unfair to the more development ones and may not get support from them. It is rather difficult to find a scientific scheme.
The willing of this suggestion is to bring students with variable backgrounds of academical levels, beliefs, life styles and races may not go smoothly as it seems. Different countries has different education levels and purposes of elementary school, junior middle school and senior middle school. For example, many Asia countries Japan and China emphasis much on the command of basic knowledge and encourage students to study as hard as they can while in western countries, the focus is on developing study habits and social interaction instead of learning actual material. While it is easy for single students to go further study in foreign countries and thrive on adapting to the rhythm, it would be quite a puzzle for the president and faculty to decide teaching plan. Further, students with different beliefs, cultural backgrounds and races may lead to conflict. Can you imagine a Israelite and a Palestinian, who have formed stable beliefs and value systems during the process of growing up, can reach an agreement on the violence between their motherland? If they can, then I believe the world won't need to emphasis so much on seeking peace in the Middle East. The long built historical enmity, religion and education seems to indicate that a much more longer time is needed to lessen the effect of them.
Even if the global university can really cultivate students of variable perspective and are creative and motivated toward solving persistent problems, will the government listen to their advices and seriously carry them out? I bet not. As every country in today's world are totally aware of the crucial environmental situation, few of them really make up their mind to protect the environment. Though Many countries have pronounced and made laws towards this question, seldom concrete actions are taken. For companies, the expense of pollution control will lead to high cost of goods, and as a result, customers have to pay more and workers may be eliminated and thus complaints occur. So it is not surprising that the government winks at what they are doing. Even the more cultivated students are engaged in this problem, aid can only scratch the surface.
A final problem with the global university is that not all countries are able or willing to afford such a high price. Some countries, they cannot even build a top-ranking university indoors, how can they help build a global university which certainly requires a much higher standard, let alone those Africa countries which are still suffering from famine. For these countries, they would rather put money on urgent problems than global ones, which they believe should be done by those who eat well. As for interchange, internet seems to be a much cheaper way. If the global university get some countries out of door, those countries will become more isolated and even harder to get developed, which is also against our purposes.
To sum up, I do hope that anything, such as global university, can be really effective in solving the world's most persistent problems. Sadly, it is proved to be unrealistic by the forgoing demonstration, especially the governments' indulgment. But if governments are really determined to solve these problems, I believe almost all these problems can be solved even without a global university. |
