What are your goals of learning? Why you choose to go to a college even study in a graduate school? Why you take on so many hard courses in the college instead of enjoying your college life in a much easier way? When addressed all these questions, I believe most people have clear ideas about them: we have goals. In order to fulfill our dreams we learning, we study, we take on a lot of homework and projects.
If you set a goal for yourself, you are motivated to study hard, learn more relevant courses. A freshman in a college will take the course of Chinese- the language which said to be the hardest in the world, because he or she think it will helpful in his or her future career and useful to help him or her to achieve his or her goals. So he or she is willing to take on this big burden.
Learning with a clear goal is important, but what is the goal is different from person to person. It is unlikely to have the same goal for different people, since people are interested in different fields. Some people said that learning for learning's sake is an outdated concept, because nowadays education must serve an ulterior purpose and be directed toward clear goals. From this statement, learning for learning's sake and clear goals of learning seem like something contradictive to each other. But actually, they are not contradictive, for me, I think they can motivated by each other. Learning for learning's sake means you are learning something that intrigued you, you have an interest in that so you want to learn that, at the beginning of the learning stage, maybe you do not have a clear idea about what you are going to do with this knowledge, but always the case, we first interest in something then we set up our goals to make an accomplishment in that field. Just like a new college student, we choose our majors depend on our interest and then set a goal about that. Then, we can truly enjoying the happiness of learning. Some students are coerced to learn something they are not interested at all from their parents' wills, they maybe can also achieve their learning goals, but they are not the goals of their own, and the learning course for them must miserable.
The most effective way for learning is combine your interest and your goals together, and the goals are always based on your interest. There are some artists, they are playing music just because they have the desire to express themselves, so they practice every day and night, and then they achieved their dreams of becoming famous musicians.
To sum up, I believe that learning for learning's sake is not outdating at all. On the contrary, learning based on the personal interest can motivate us to achieve our goals. And it is not necessarily to have a clear goal at the beginning of the learning stage, we can cultivate our interest in the learning period and make the decision to say if it is the one you are really want to devote to.
