11 "Money spent on research is almost always a good investment, even when the results of that research are controversial." 花在研究上的资金基本上都是不错的投资,即使研究的结果是有争议的。 现实和理想
I fundamentally agree with the speaker that money spent on research is almost always worthy since past experiences have proved that many technologies promotes the levels of people’s lives. However, to some researches, which are controversial, we should consider them by long-term rather than only focus on its present profits.
The first reason why I partially agree with the author is that the successes of some researches have brought convenience to human being. Nowadays, people have gotten free from heavy housework and enjoy the relaxation from technological advancement. Such researches benefit us and improve the qualities of our daily lives. Taking Japan as an example, women were always tied to a way of life before, which is to do most of the housework and to look after children. However, new technologies have changed their lives absolutely. Washing machines, special digital products designed for kitchen, automatically dust catchers and so on, such technologies attribute to more time to let women to pursue their own values in the job fields and take part in the activities what they like. Without these useful researches, perhaps human beings must cost huge amounts of times and energies on boring housework.
Another reason for my fundamentally agreement is that some researches have proved to be essential during the process of the development of human beings. In other words, technology plays an extremely important role in the advancement of several aspects, especially in medical machines. For instance, doctors did not have devices allowing them to go inside the human body to identify health problems or to perform delicate surgery. However, that’s about to change. Advances in computers and biophysics have started a micro miniature revolution that’s allowing scientists to envision and in some cases actually build microscopic machines. These devices promise to radically change the way we live.
However, we still should be careful to those researches, which are full of controversies. Different opinions around the same study sometimes mean that such a research more or less has limitation itself. For example, human cloning, one of the most astonishing and challenging techniques, at the same time, is also perilous to the morality and ethics. Thus, to those controversial studies, if we only see the profits temporarily but overlook its long-term influence, maybe we will lead to a disaster and hurt ourselves.
In sum, the government should encourage more researches that can be helpful to us even they need a large amount of money since time will show that they are worthy to us one day. But to some controversial study we must consider its potential disadvantages in advance. Only after ensuring its value, can we spend money on it.
