11.4 It has been said, "Not everything that is learned is contained in books." Compare and contrast knowledge gained from experience with knowledge gained from books. In your opinion, which source is more important? Why?' C6 i4
Whatever experience or books, It’s certainly one of the most important source to obtain knowledge. However, as an old saying goes: Not everything that is learned is contained in books. That’s really true since so much abstract knowledge is not from books. With carefully comparison, I think experience is more important than books.
First of all, experience is the directly way to gain knowledge rather than books. In another words, We can get first hand knowledge which is even not discovered by others through experience. For example, Edison invents bulb for whole world through thousands of experiment. No one told him how he could be successful, and he also did not get method from books. He just did experiment one by one and groped new way from failures, finally he was successful for the great invention.
Furthermore, plenty of knowledge is not gained from books, especially the abstract knowledge, such as swimming, we could not learn it very well if we do not practice it by ourselves. When I was in college, I had to take swimming class. I was so nervous because I’m afraid of water very much. In order to prepare for it well I bought one book to learn swimming skill. After several days later, I had no idea about that. But at the same time, my classmates who also can not swim went to swimming pool directly, and it was surprising that they could manage basic skills to swim. This event gives me profound impression that we could not learn abstract knowledge from books, experience is the only way to get abstract knowledge.
Last but not least, much knowledge comes from experience and is regarded as fundamental theory for its accuracy, such as mechanical theorem. Now this theory appears on books as a fundamental formula, but many people ignore that theory is deduced from lots of data from experience. In ancient times, when people built house or did other labor activities, they concluded many data through trials. So new knowledge is always appear in experience, we just can asorb fundamental knowledge from books, but as to new knowledge, it always comes from experience.
In sum, taking into account these factors discussed above, we can conclude that experience is more important than books. You can always gain much new knowledge through experience which is not on books. |
