Argument 14: The following appeared in memo from the owner of Green Thumb Gardening Center, a small business serving a suburban town.
There is evidence that consumers are becoming more and more interested in growing their own vegetables. A nationwide survey conducted last month indicated that many consumers were dissatisfied with the quality of fresh vegetables available in supermarkets. And locally, the gardening magazine Great Gardens has sold out at the Village News stand three months in a row. Thus, we at Green Thumb Gardening Center can increase our profits by greatly expending the variety of vegetable seeds we stock for gardeners this coming spring.

The owner of Green Thumb Gardening Center (GTGC) suggests that in order to increase profits GTGC should stock more vegetable seeds for this coming spring. The owner also cites the following evidences to support this suggestion. One is that the results of a nationwide survey show that people are less satisfied with vegetables in supermarket. The other is that Great Gardens, a gardening magazine, has sold out at Village News for three months in a row. However, the argument is devoid of reasoning in several respects.

To begin with, the result of the nationwide survey indicates little about the attitude of local people towards vegetable in supermarket. The result of the nationwide survey reflects the trend that people dislike vegetables in supermarket throughout the country, but the local trend maybe the opposite. Perhaps vegetables in supermarket in the local place are fresher than the nation level and people there are quite satisfied with it. It is also possible that even though the quality of vegetable is low, the local residents are not very critical about it and willing to buy it in supermarket. If either of the scenario is the case, the result of the nationwide survey would be little persuasive.

Granted that the local residents dislike vegetable available in supermarket, the author could not infer that they are willing to grow their own vegetables. Perhaps they would still buy vegetables from supermarket despite their dissatisfaction. Or perhaps they would buy vegetables at vegetable stands or even directly from the farmers. This assumption would be unwarranted unless the author provides enough evidence to support it.

Furthermore, based on the great sales of Great Gardening at Village News stand, the author assumes that residents are more interested in planting vegetables. However, the great sale at one stand does not indicate overall sale is great. There is a chance that the better sale in the last three months is due to Village News’ discount on this magazine. Or perhaps people who bought this magazine are likely to improve their skills of planting flowers or other plants except vegetables. So the fact that Great Gardening has sold out in the last three months may have nothing to do with planting vegetables.

In the third place, when it comes to profits the prediction would be more speculative. As we all know, profitability is a function of expense and price. What if the stoking cost increase? Or what if GTGC has to decrease the price of their seeds in order to compete for dominance with other companies? If either is the case, even most of the residents buy seeds from GTGC, the profit may not increase.

Besides, the author mentioned in the argument that the seeds stocked are for this spring. Obviously, the author overlooks the possibility that by that time supermarket would sell fresher vegetables with which the consumers would be satisfied.

All in all, the argument is unconvincing in the foregoing aspects. The suggestion could be adopted unless the author provides more evidence that the local people are unwilling to buy vegetables available in the supermarket and prefer to grow vegetables by themselves. We should also be informed the price of these vegetable seeds to decide whether the profits will increase. Only in this way, can we put judgment on the author’s suggestion.
